Report: | Tuesday 15th November was geared up to be a historic date for David Lloyd 1st team as they took on Bexley 2nd team; it was our first match on the “fantastic new squash courts” (quote taken from the David Lloyd newsletter, not Marc Aldridge whose quote could not be published here due to offensive language). However, due to a lack of heaters and a broom, this was not a night to remember.
First on court was home team captain Paul James, who is currently supporting a pornstar moustache and outfit for movember, and Mark Steeden, who apparently needs half an hour to get changed for squash. The match started off slowly as both players were looking to adjust to the freezing temperatures, early advantage was with Mark Steeden as he had come prepared wearing a thermal under top. There were not many memorable moments in the 1st game (or the match really) as Paul James managed to play the wrong shot every time he hit the ball and Steeden just got on with it. There was a similar story in the second game, Steeden just hitting the ball to the back and Paul James taking the wrong option every time. I will be honest here and state that it did affect my marking, at one point Paul James had a clear ‘stroke’ and out of annoyance I gave him a ‘let’. Sorry about this Paul, but you were playing useless and I thought it would spur you on….however this didn’t work. Paul James managed to win the third game, but a victory never looked in doubt for Steeden as Paul James persisted with the tactic of trying to play a drop shot off of every ball. Mark won 3-1.
On the other court Martin Snow aka Andy Johnson was playing Rob Lewis. I didn’t get to see huge amounts of this match so apologies for the lack of detail, this account is mainly taken from my Dad’s perspective (and he wasn’t wearing glasses so it may not be 100% accurate). Lewis took an early lead in the match coming out with some nice shots exploiting the courts lack of ‘gripage’. Andy Johnson was looking initially like he was struggling as he couldn’t seem to play a shot without slipping over. Lewis found himself leading 2-1 in games; however Andy Johnson managed to keep his footing and saw the match out 3-2 despite Lewis’ flurry of shots.
The next match on the ice rink was the number ones which was me versus Richie Fallows. This being the first time we had played, Richie wasn’t used to someone who was looking to play a boast or winner at the first possible opportunity. The game scores do not paint a true reflection of the match, I was able to squeeze in a couple of needed winners and Richie was slightly unlucky. The match finished 3-0. One thing that came out of the match is that Richie is definitely going to be one to watch, he plays a strong game and with the right guidance behind him he will have the opportunity to do something in squash.
The same cannot however be said for our number two seed Marc Aldridge, he was next on versus Josh Masters. From the very start, Aldo’s game plan was that he is too old and injury prone to be diving around the squash court. So Josh won in convincing style, dropping two points.
Performance of the evening went to Brad Masters who played Dan ‘Clubber’ Lark at number five. Right from the start Brad seemed to be on top displaying vastly superior racket ability than his opponent, who it must be said at times looked like he was swinging an axe. Masters pushed forward to a 2-0 lead and was keeping his head despite some odd tactics from his opponent. ‘Clubber’ Lark was accusing Masters of being physical on court, now anyone who knows the size of both of these players will know this is the most ridiculous comment ever. ‘Clubber’ Lark’s constant whinging seemed to be taking affect as he narrowly took the third game, however Masters managed told hold firm and pushed through to win 3-1. A good performance by the young man who out muscled ‘Clubber’ Lark despite his lack of size and weight.
All in all a good evening was had by all hopefully. David Lloyd has now confirmed that heaters will be added to the courts, no date has been given so I cannot confirm when this will be.
