Report: | The season's opener (for PL) against BCC was an injury hit affair. A flurry of pre match texts from a disgruntled Sam saw the visitors digging down into their 3rd team to bolster the numbers.
First off London jnr v Stabler
A fairly routine affair by all accounts. Didn't see any of it, but Steve appears to have dominated the first two games before Sam made him work for the 3rd. I did see the match winning shot (a top spin half volley drop cross court into the nick) so if that was any indication of the way things were going throughout the match, Steve must have been in good form. Sam looked thoroughly fed up, mainly with the problems of trying to organise a team.
Next door London snr v Johnson
This was an enjoyable and competitive match (for me at least - can't speak for Keeley). The author always enjoys it when someone plays a fairly conventional game. Keeley plays a very effective length game and the only real difference was mobility (don't laugh) and a few mistakes late on as Keeley went for short stuff. The author started to realise what playing against himself is like early in the knock up as a succession of high wide lobs came across. To be fair, it wasn't really like that in the match itself.
Next up Thompson v Beaumont
Another draftee, Ross got off to a pretty good start, with Martin looking a little out of sorts at the beginning. Having bagged the first though, Martin eased his foot onto the gas and pulled away to record a pretty comfortable win and keep the momentum going.
Next door Pratt v Horder
This one was probably match of the evening. WW started in imperious form running through the 1st in a single hand. The PL script writers obviously knew what was coming next though, having seen it a million times before. Despite been exhorted not to mess around, WW was unable to resist the temptation to go for it. Matt duly got into his stride and thereafter it was a nip and tuck affair. Matt exhibited his usual brand of mobility covering a lot of court, but WW got it back together well and ran out a good winner.
Last on Culver v McMeckan
Having at last obtained the services of PL's latest member of the teaching profession on a permanent basis, this was a tall order for James to salvage something for BCC. So it proved. James actually looked to be playing pretty well until the last couple of points, but WB was his usual effective and uncompromising self. No quarter asked or given, and a comprehensive 3-0 to round off the night.
Pleasant banter in the bar as ever with the BCC boys, with John Terry getting his comeuppance particularly as it was supported by an eye witness account from James. Much discussion about BCC's planned court improvements and thinly veiled threats to poach PL's playing staff too.
A speedy escape was achieved before the 4th team had even appeared in the bar. Lucky it wasn't PAR :o) |
