Report

Report:This new year opener was like an extra episode of Frozen Planet. Having trekked past the squash courts converted to a McDonalds burger bar, revamped bar area and leaking ceilings in the corridors, through freezing table tennis and badminton halls, we all arrived at the new squash courts.

Confirmation has now apparently been received that there will be no heaters fitted, and the management attitude appears to be like it or lump it. The courts look nice but they and the surrounding area are freezing even on a not particularly cold night. To cap it all David Lloyd had a truncated team thanks to late withdrawals from messrs Olby and Aldridge.

First up James v Culver.
The same old script for WB. Even looking rallies culminating in very few points for Paul. Each game followed the same pattern and Simon was soon outside the courts studying school work(!) after his usual comprehensive victory.

Next door, Wilde v London jnr
Steve took quite a while to get going on a court that was tailor made for Jamie's game. Anything short, hard and low or within six inches of the nick was a dead'un and Jamie sprayed 'em in as usual. Steve got it together to win the 3rd at a canter but Jamie regrouped in the 4th and ran out a comfortable winner.

Next up Snow v Pratt.
DL's most appropriately named player put up a good performance against PL's WW. Some good rallies in this one. Maybe not textbook stuff but entertaining and demonstrating excellent mobility by both players. Steve lost biggish leads in both of the first two games but did enough to hang on and claim them. Martin turned the tables in the 3rd with WW's new years resolution to give up smoking causing his anger levels to bubble very close to the surface (he claims that's the reason anyway). The racket never quite reached escape velocity but it was mighty close on a few occasions. WW did enough to take a close 4th though for a hard fought win.

Last on Webb v Robbins.
The last of DL's Surrey contingent was up in both of the first two games as JEJ looked a bit restricted with a stiff back. As before with these two though, JEJ just did enough to somehow take both games. Again much like the evening's other matches the 3rd saw an about face, but again the 4th saw another switch for JEJ to come through strongly and finish a good night for PL.

The author (spectating for the evening) had a chance to compile comprehensive notes on all matches for a change and was quick to head off to warmer climes having bagged mucho subs arrears. This resulted in a world record for scores entered and report written!
