Report

Report:Jamie kindly said he'd do a match report!!...

They say that in times of war you find out who people really are. However, we do not need a war to highlight that Paul James’ leadership is hopeless. If he was leading you over the top of the trenches he would have forgotten his rifle, hand gun, helmet and shoes. Just like he forgot to organise five people to ‘play’ at a squash match. I emphasise the word ‘play’ here as we actually had six members of the team present at last night’s match but Paul informed two of them that they were not needed, so they hit the bar. By the time it had become apparent that we hadn’t actually got a fifth player our two substitutes were miles past the limit. I will continue the story later, however I’m going to briefly report on the evening’s matches first.

First on court was Marc Aldridge (Aldo) versus Tom May. Aldo has had a busy weekend representing his county at the over-45’s level and then playing Surrey Cup on Monday evening. Combine this with 20 pints of beer, three bottles of red wine and constant text messages to his three lady friends and you have a very tired man. However, as always Tom was up for the challenge and looked as ‘stead fast’ as ever. Aldo started the game as he was obviously going to continue…..by moaning at Duane to get him to actually mark the match. The game started at a fast pace with both players hitting decent lengths mixed with the odd leisure centre fashioned winner. This continued for a few point before it became apparent that Tom was going to be too strong for Aldo this evening. Tom had the match under control and in the second game Aldo was letting fly with his racket, the only thing that was missing was the ‘language’. As Tom was leading 2-0, Aldo decided to change tactic in the third game by keeping hold of his racket and Tom was maybe starting to feel a little nervous about winning. Prior to this game May had been in complete control, however, Aldo managed to find himself with a game ball. As cool as you like, May hit an outrageous ‘drop shot half volley winner’ on the return of serve and he never looked back from there and saw the game out 10-8.

The match taking place on the other court was Paul James (Captain Crap or ‘CC’ for short) and Matt Badger. As both players were knocking up, CC looked more rugged than normal as his attempt at ‘Movember’ is just turning into a mess on his face, I tell you December cannot come quickly enough for that man to sort himself out! Matt Badger is following in the footsteps of many famous Bexley squash players by donning an oversize knee strap, Mark Steeden would have been jealous. As the match started, Badger seemed to be struggling a little with his movement around court (hence the knee strap) but CC though he would help him out by hitting every shot back to him or in the tin. Badger was in control at 2-0 using his trademark smash forehand and CC playing his trademark game of ‘how not to play squash’. Matt lost concentration in the third (probably because he was bored) but again the result was never in doubt and Badger won 3-1.

Following the above match was myself versus Ben Ford. From the very first point, Ford looked like he was right on it and was not looking to give anything away. This carried on through the whole match with Ford displaying greater control of the racket and greater knowledge of the court. I knew it was his night when he managed to hit a rolling nick with broken strings! The better man won 3-0.

The other match taking place was Guy Olby versus Duane Harrison. Both players were showing their age before the match, as when you ask them: “how have you been playing”, their answer is instantly a list of the injuries/holidays they have had over the past month. I didn’t get to see huge amounts of the match but apparently Olby was too strong Harrison who is struggling with his back at the moment and he won 3-0.

There wasn’t a fifth match due to Paul James/CC.
