Report: | After the first half mid-season break it was back into the fray welcoming old foe Rodmersham to the Giant Arches. Ok, so it’s not quite Queen’s but there’s plenty of history and there is the odd tennis court t’boot.
Making a welcome return to the team Lauren showed little mercy early on putting Sam to the sword. Serme might have thought he was a little nervous about his female court companion, but he soon settled and opened up an 8-4 lead in the second. However, Lauren steadied the ship and reeled him back in closing it out with a nice Nic.Olleys was clearly on her mind as she upped the pace in the third to get home in three.
Meanwhile, Dulwich’s answer to Tom Cruise started brightly against his non-namesake Tom leaping in to a quick lead bouncing around like he was powered by a super jenny-rator. However, the effects of listening to The Fighter sound-track soon wore off and the mercurial man from Rodders edged the next two 9/7. Will bounced back to level it and the fifth was nip and tuck until the real Tom’s groin went and despite his best efforts to Grinham bear it a match point went begging and Will snuck home, just.
Tim and Neil played out an entertaining five-setting as first Neil gained the upper-hand and had chances to lead 2-0 before finding himself two-one down. Despite strict instructions to himself not to boast, that’s exactly what Tim did in the fourth and unsurprisingly came unstuck and Neil punished the Dulwich captain to set up a decider. Finally, the call of Olley’s seemed to focus Tim’s mind and he raced through to love.
Meanwhile Paul was battling both a tough opponent in Jon and an even tougher one in himself. Having fallen behind 0-8 in the first, he worked hard to lose it 9/7. Still clearly Brown’d off with himself he came out firing in the second to level things up, but Jon dug in and chased down every ball to come through in four. As always a Laura unto himself, Paul shook hands and disappeared. Expect the match fee is in the post!
With Rodmersham only having four players it was too early for a Donna, so Olley’s finest fish and chips were duly served up and the usual banter bounced about. Highlight being confirmation that Will does look like his buddy ‘Cruisey’ and that’s why he had a photo of himself as his iphone screen saver …
