Report

Report:Tun Wells visited PL last night to give the home team their first match in 3 weeks. This was a full strength match up all round but in the end the most interesting aspect of the evening revolved around the most one sided match, of which more later.

First up Robbins v Head.
These two almost always have a 3-2, usually with JEJ dragging it back from the brink. Not this time. JEJ had a decent warm up pre-match after a coaching session with Steve and commented that this was where he'd been going wrong for the past 4 seasons (i.e. he never warms up). In any event, it did the trick and JEJ rolled back the years with a vintage performance to comfortably take the match, with Jolyon being given little opportunity to do much about it, despite playing pretty well himself.

Out in the graveyard court Culver v Payne.
As noted above, a strange one this. I arrived with the score at 8-0 in the 1st, for Steve L (marking) to tell me that he'd just had to go and lecture Colin who'd decided he'd had enough and was about to walk off court because it was "a waste of his time". A bit of logic was apparently applied, the fact that it was going to be a bit of a waste of Simon's time too if he had only half a game, etc, etc. Anyway, good sense prevailed and the match went through to completion. This was followed by a protracted discussion between Simon, Colin and Steve L (that I deliberately avoided) about the kind of game Colin is looking for these days. Obviously Colin isn't aware of the Culver "take no prisoners" approach to EVERYONE regardless. It's not a p*ss take as he felt it was. It's the way WB always plays.

Anyway, drama over and onto Pratt v Powell.
WW took a while to get going in this with Jonny's pre-match reaction toning exercises (Angry Birds or some such) paying early dividends. Didn't see too much of it, but he obviously got over the early ring rust and with Jonny starting to look a bit pained WW got on the gas and wrapped up the next three games pretty tidily.

Out on the back court, London jnr v Evans.
Steve looked a little out of sorts in the 1st with James chasing everything down, but settled down to take the next two comfortably. This was followed by a tough final game with Steve having to come back from a few game balls down to finally take it in four.

And so to the last match, London snr v Bucknor.
A fine performance from Paul here. I don't recall ever seeing him hit it so tight. The 1st was evenly matched with a few mistakes at the end being the difference. The author got it back together and played well to take the 2nd and take a 3-0 lead in the 3rd. From here on in though the balance swung. The author made too many mistakes and gave Paul too many balls around the service box. Paul duly buried every opportunity presented with aplomb and ensured everything else stayed glued to the sidewalls. A very impressive performance to give TW some more traction on the scoreboard.

A good win for PL followed by long discussions in the bar afterwards, with the PL contingent eventually being chucked out rather late as the chairs went up on the tables. A good evening.
