Report

Report:The PL 1st team entertained Bexley I in last night's fixture. Two teams pretty much at full strength looked set to deliver a good match. In point of fact it turned out to be a bit of a misfire in some respects.

First up Robbins v Harrison.
With JEJ very much on an upward curve at the moment, he didn't really give Duane a chance to settle into any sort of rhythm. An impressive full pace start saw JEJ out of the blocks and away to take the first. A couple of decisions that Duane didn't seem too happy with (sorry mate) seemed to get him fired up in the 2nd and there were a few brief glimpses of the typical Harrison response to adversity as the pace of shot upped by a few notches. Duane was a bit unlucky not to pull it back to level pegging. In the 3rd however it was a re-run of the 1st, with JEJ rounding off a comfortable win. Award of the night to both players for their very smart, colour coordinated black and red ensembles.

Next door, Pratt v Badger.
With Matt keen to get on, off and away to the wilds of Swindon straight after the match, this was the best possible way to ensure a speedy finish. Whilst I could only spare the occasional glance at the proceedings, the scoreline says it all. WW looked as motivated as I've ever seen him, and the Matt Badger mask will now be prepared for all opponents to wear in future. The 1st and 3rd games were absolutely blitzed (without a single hand-in in the 3rd). The obligatory switch off was, of course, sandwiched between these two, and the 4th provided the only evenly contested game of the match. Bizarre indeed, with Matt unsurprisingly not too thrilled.

Next up, London jnr v Ford.
With one or two minor tweaks this conformed to the normal script between these two. I only saw the start and end, but by all accounts it was the usual high quality encounter. Steve came back from huge deficits in both the 1st and 2nd to lead 2-0. Ben then steamrollered the 3rd and took a tight 4th after one or two unfortunate shot selections from Steve near the end of the game. A big lead for Ben in the 5th, once again hauled back by Steve. The end of the match was very unsatisfactory for Steve. A hotly disputed stroke to give Ben 8-6 followed by Steve losing his footing on a forehand drive and thereby concede another stroke is no way to end a good match, and Steve was mightily dischuffed. Nevertheless, a quality encounter again.

Next door, London snr v Lamprell.
This one got off to a pacy start, with Stuart looking to pile it on straight away. The author managed to weather the onslaught however, and took advantage of one or two mistakes to take the 1st. The 2nd saw the author into his stride, but after perhaps getting a little over confident, a lead in the 3rd was turned into a 7-8 deficit and the author had to claw it back as Stuart gave it 100%, and eventually squeezed through to secure a win.

Last on Culver v a very patient May.
Tom in particular had had a lonn n g time sitting on the terraces before this one. Normal service by WB was expected and the 1st seemed to support this view. From the 2nd onwards though, the Culver racket seemed to be dispatching a much higher than normal percentage of errors. Nevertheless, the movement was as good as ever and both the 2nd and 3rd were well contested, with Simon just doing enough to take them both and round off a stellar result for PL.

With the ex educational oik - but now responsible citizen :o) - and the new teacher in the team, bar room talk is always interesting and so it proved again. A thoroughly pleasing result for PL, but as noted at the top, perhaps not quite up to the heights expected. Almost like watching the England football team really. Promises a lot but ...
