Report

Report:After spending a good part of the the day trying to acquire a 5th player (running 6 teams does have some major downsides), PL were eventually able to field a full line-up largely thanks to the 5th team's opposition being short! So, suitably armed we hosted Bromley LTC.

First up Robbins v Mortimer.
Nice to see Toby on another comeback, and despite carrying the odd extra pound or three he certainly hasn't forgotten how to play squash during the long lay-off. JEJ never seems to have liked playing him and so it seemed again last night. A clash of movement styles combined with a very dead ball/court saw JEJ struggling and just about avoiding going 0-2 down as Toby repeatedly wrong footed him and pushed in a flurry of tight boast winners early on. I didn't see the latter half of the game which lasted a long while but I'm guessing that fitness came into it as the match wore on and JEJ did enough to come through a tough 3-1.

Next door Kennedy v Patel (K).
Ket had received a couple of calls during the day as first he had no opponent then he did. Gina had originally been destined for the 5ths but as their opposition were short, a swift promotion was in order. This was an impressive effort by Gina. For the first game it was nip and tuck with Gina showing her trademark mobility to good effect. Ket's speed and power started to take their toll as the match wore on though and a few too many boasts and short cross courts saw Gina being severely pressurised. Nonetheless, a good effort and in a few years time, watch out.

Next on London snr v Patel (S).
It's been a while since these two crossed swords in Surrey Cup, but this was another tough match. Shil got into his stride early on to take a big lead. The author eventually got going to claw it back and hold game balls, but was unable to close it out. The 2nd and 3rd saw the author's trademark lobs working to pretty good effect, but in the 4th Shil stepped up the pace and got in front from the off. Once again, the author found enough reserves to claw it back and this time despite more sitters missed on match ball, eventually closed out the match.

Next door Thompson v McManus.
Saw only the end of this one but both protagonists felt it was unlikely to feature in their top ten Priory encounters. Gordon was about as happy as he usually is on PL courts. Despite now having white side walls he finds the dark tins very off putting. That in combination with Martin's usual brand of tight low boasts coupled with a sprinkling of overhead nicks was enough to see Martin through to a good win.

Final match of the night, London jnr v Jeal.
His teammates had been unsure whether he was coming as it got later with Ted being as uncontactable as ever, however it turned out to be a birthday celebration and sure enough he pitched up. This was a pretty gruelling encounter for both players and marker (yours truly). A lot of high quality stuff from both players laced with too many mistakes from Steve and Ted's usual brand of show boating (between the legs back wall boasts etc). Steve did just enough to scrape the 1st, and Ted dominated to take the 2nd at a canter. The 3rd was a real battle with Ted getting very disgruntled (still not really sure why) at one or two lets calls awarded to Steve. I think anyone watching this (and there were a lot) could see the astonishing court coverage by both players meant that not much was dead. Steve just squeaked the 3rd. In the 4th Ted was like a man possessed, flicking in a flurry of unbelievably tight winners to take a 7-1 lead. As Martin raced away to get the court lights extended in anticipation of a 5th Steve had other ideas and stepped up the pace and pressure. Many long gruelling rallies later, Ted was suffering and Steve came through without the loss of another point to win it. A quality encounter.

So, in all a shed load of effort from the BLTC boys (for scant reward) as the prompt start and 10.50pm finish attest. No wimping about scoring systems and late finishes were to be heard though in the absence of Bexley boys (had to get that in) and a good evening's entertainment for all concerned. Just arrived in the bar as the last orders bell rung, long after the 3rd and 5th team matches were done and dusted.
