Report

Report:Well it was a couple of days early I suppose, but the phrase "beware the ides of March" sprung to mind as a Dulwich team bristling with talent pitched up at Langley Towers' doors. Sadly PL1 had their order beheaded by the loss of an injured Steve at no.1 so it was looking like a tough evening's work in prospect - and so it turned out.

First up Pratt v Bristow.
The score really doesn't do justice to this one as far as WW is concerned. This was a good performance against a massively strong no.3 in Jim. The old speed was well in evidence, and an array of outrageous nick shots, skid boasts et al was deployed in the effort to disrupt Jim's steady accurate game. Sadly, whatever Steve threw at him, Jim just soaked it up. The 1st presented the best opportunity and a few untimely mistakes lost it for WW. From there, it was good rallies all through, usually ending in Steve deciding to go for the right shot but clipping the tin. Ultimately disappointing, but nevertheless a sterling effort.

Next door, Robbins v Garner.
JEJ has been doing a bit of running of late and the fitness levels and movement have been coming back with some good results. This however was several steps up on the pressure stakes. Tim looked right up for this one and had JEJ scampering all round the court. Great accuracy and shot selection throughout. JEJ wasn't too happy with the way he played particularly in the 2nd, but in truth Tim was right on it. Another win for Dulwich and things starting to look ominous.

Next up Culver v Hitchens.
The PL wrecking ball has been digesting player after player and spitting out the carcasses all season, so this looked to be an interesting match up. On the back of a good county weekend, Simon looked to be playing pretty well, but Neil exerted such a level of control of pace, and a consistently unreturnable backhand drop, that WB was hard pressed throughout. It looked for a while as though Neil might falter as Simon took the 3rd comfortably, but he regrouped to see off a determined challenge. Still, a point on the board at last!

Next door, Thompson v Brownsdon.
Martin had informed his captain that he'd never beaten Will before so this also looked another tough one. Will came out of the blocks fast, as usual, and sprayed in a number of good forehand winners as Martin opened up the court a bit too much with the cross courts. This pattern continued deep into the 3rd, but at 0-2 games and 0-6 it all changed. Martin, who had heeded the coaching staff's advice a the end of game two to keep it straighter on his forehand turned it round big style. The rest of the match was never less than tight at any point, but Martin completed a stunning comeback to complete the performance of the night with a 3-2 win.

Last on, and attempting to maintain the wagging PL tail, London snr v Moore.
This was a battle. The author got going early, and controlled the 1st. Andy returned the favour in the 2nd as the author inexplicably switched off the game plan. Back on track in the 3rd, which was a tight game. Plenty of effort expended on both sides, but the author had a good run of points at the end to take the game and a 2-1 lead. Another major switch off at the start of the 4th saw the author 5-2 down but following a fight back a long battle ensued at 6-8, finally culminating in a silly mistake to lose a close one. The 5th was totally controlled by Andy as the author failed to get into the game at all.

So, a bit of a damage limitation exercise really. Dulwich just too good, and revenge for PL's win earlier in the season. Despite getting both courts underway at an unfashionably early 7.30, the author ambled into the bar as last orders were called. To continue DC's Steeden baiting, this was a real man's hairy chested finish time (no doubt due to the scoring system). Sadly for the author, not much time for anything other than to pick up the tab!
