Report

Report:An awesome encounter, this was, between two of Kent's longest standing rivals. As the Greeks waged a war by referendum and two Pakistani cricketers were convicted of match fixing having run that not so original defence,"it was not me guv", in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, Dulwich took on Park Langley.

Once the keys to the lights had been found, the number 5s went on first. This was an epic battle between these two models of male athletecism. Beevers, the Park Langley man showed the skill he has with his racket with his cross court drops dying in the nick and galloped to an 8-1 lead. There then followed a fight back by Dogra of Dulwich to 6-8 before a forehand drop was a wee bit high. Beevers, moving with agility from the T position, put it away and served out to take the game. The second game started after the first ended. The rallies were brutal, with each corner of the court being visted by ball and man in gladatorial fashion. Forty shot rallies ensured that the fitness of these warriors was tested to the limit. These matches are far from easy. The shots need to be put away and the legs need to keep going. All that pre-season training was now paying dividends. 1-0 to Dulwich.

We then had two humdingers. Jon vs Mark went to five and was worthy of a division 1 game. Jon graced the court with his skill which he has in abundance and Mark showed off the retrieving power and stamina which is his trademark. Great to see squash of this standard. The public were baying for more and the stewards had to keep an eye on possible disorder as the rival supporters sang their hearts out. What an ending though. At 6-7 in the 5th game and receiving, Jon caught the ball saying it had burst. It had not. Point to his opponent and match ball we thought as did teh marker. Sportingly Mark played a let but nevertheless went on to win the match.

The number 2 rubber competed at the same time. Fergus put fatherhood behind him to hit the ball hard, playing his cross court drops against Chris who drove, dropped and then stood a fingertip away from the summit before the turning point. At 2-1 up, Chris had six match points and Fergus rode them all to take the game and level it at 2-2. On a high Fergus then took the match 3-2.

Jack having had a good win last week was hoping to climb similar heights again playing Ray Bushell. However Ray is a cany squash player and read Jack like a book. Driving to a perfect length and width Ray played the ideal squash match and won easily. Those shorts worn by the home player, though, have come under some scrutiny and there is some debate over referring them to Squash England for approval.

That left Olly to contest the final rubber against Sam. This might have been a dead rubber in the context of this match but all the points count. Olly did the job he was selected to do and won 3-1.

Look forward to the return.

We played Pl 2 last week - their number 1 was a certain James Robbins who plays at number 1 or 2 in division 1. Ken Cotton who runs that team must be thinking his team is still in division 1, which is an easy mistake to make. Will someone please remind him that his team are in division 2 now. It would have been farcical if we had made the same error and played our equivalent - Tim Garner our no.1 or Pete Genever our no.2.
