Report

Report:This was a hard fought win for Dulwich that could easily have gone the other way.

First up was Duncan and Andrew. The Bexley Bruiser bashed the ball all over the court with extreme accuracy in the 1st game and Duncan could not figure out where the ball was heading for the most part. Duncan gradually steadied things in the 2nd and continued the same approach in the 3rd. Things changed in the 4th when a No Let went against Andrew and this quenched Thirsk's thirst for the fight and he then flung himself all over the place determined to win this game which he duly did. That seemed to reduce Andrew's powers for the 5th set and at 8-0 down he managed a couple more points before Duncan finished off an enthralling match.

Dave and James were up next - both unbeaten so far this season. Dave began quickly and showed James how to play squash in the vertical position and took the 1st in short order without dropping a point. James could not keep on his feet on the newly sanded court although he was the only one on the night who had this problem - time to ask Santa for some new trainers. Dave duly took the 2nd as James spent most of his time on his knees at which point the Bexley team Captain ordered James off the court for his one sake - Dulwich go 2-0 up.

On the other court Antonio was putting Ron to the sword as he said he would. Apart from a slight hiccup in the 2nd game it looked like Antonio was heading for a 3-1 win until he fell foul of the referees curse and instead of concentrating on winning the game he became embroiled in discussions with the ref. Ron kept on going like the machine that he is whilst Antonio started to falter. Ron wrapped up the 4th and did not let up in the 5th which he won to make the match score 2-1.

In the meantime Alex B and Richard started their match and Alex was struggling to cope with Richard early on. Alex made a better fist of it in the 2nd but went 2-0 down. Alex seized control of the 3rd set and it looked like the worm had turned but Richard had other ideas and wrapped in up in the 4th to make it 2-2 on the night.

Finally up stepped Alex V and Keith (I play tennis me) Mabey in an unexpected decider. Alex did not let Dulwich down even though he has not been playing too much lately. Alex played some nice touch shots early on and took the first game easily. The 2nd was looking like another easy one for Alex but Keith came back and might well have taken it but Alex finished off the last couple of points well. The 3rd was much like the 2nd with Alex always seeming to have the edge and with a little bit of encouragement from the balcony Alex finished off well to give Dulwich a 3-2 win having only dropped 3 points on the night.

Comment by Bexley Team Captain:
James Cray conceded 2nd string match due to slippery court.
