Report: | The resident of number 11 Downing Street had delivered the Autumn Statement as strikes struck London. Cleggers was doing his best to do a passable impersonation of a man still in control as part of the coalition with The Rt Hon D Cameron Esq. A strike of different sorts was taking place at Bromley CC as Brackers found his team one man (or woman?) down. So, onto the squash and first on was that outstanding number 5 for Dulwich, Mr Walk Over, who has an astonishing 100% record. Not even the anonymous Debt Collector of Park Langley will better that one. Dulwich 1-0 up.
Next on was Mr. Grant to you and I but Trevor to his mates. Trevor continues to play a high quality of sqaush and feeds off younger less experienced opponents. He did precisiely that here as Olly hit far too often to Trev's forehand and then allowed him to volley at waist height on both sides. Trevor took the match 3-1.
Meanwhile Tom was taking on Stewart Gotts. After last week's debacle on unplayable courts at Blackheath, Tom welcomed playing on proper squash courts. His opponent, Stewart, was at his usual hard hitting and deceptive best. However the Dulwich man had a score to settle after the frustration of the previous week and Stewart was his target. A 3-0 win for Tom and Dulwich 2-1 up.
The on came the number 1s, with Tom Stone in the Bromley CC corner growling with restraint. His skipper let him off the leash and casually chucked a bone onto the court as Tom went for it with a leap and a bound. His victim was Stuart Empson. Stone set upon him, cutting viciously and smashing the ball in the nick at will. Tom has a technically brilliant backhand which secured a 3-0 win for the home player with the match poised at 2-2.
That left the two skippers to fight it out for the prize. An athletic encounter with some remarkable retrieving ensued. This was squash at its best. Rallies took the combatants to all four corners and then some. Brackers showed that he can on his day produce the shots to win matches. But notwithstanding his best efforts, the day belonged to Dulwich as Dogra took the game 3-1 and Dulwich the match 3-2.
In keeping with tradition Bromley CC provided a decent supper with pudding along with good banter. Playing on Wednesday means some of the Bromley squad cannot make it including a few of the top guys. But competetive nevertheless. |
