Report: | Off to a refreshingly prompt start (but note finish time later 'girl Steeden')
First up:
Zimbabwean Warthog v Richard.
Sorry Warthog, not much to say on this one as I did not see a single shot (on court next door). Warthog kept up his sterling job at 5 in a bit more of a comfortable fashion than last week.
Sweaty Sock v John
Again saw very little of this one (still on court next door !) Saw a few rallies in the fourth where Sweaty was in total control but I understand John already had a problem with his calf. (do Warthogs have calves in a different sense ?)
Debt Collector v Stefan
DC very nearly mugged in this one. Stefan started very slowly with DC thinking this would be done and dusted in about 15 minutes after winning the first very quickly. At 5/0 in the second, no reason to change this view. However from here on in Stefan gradually gained a better width and length and eventually took complete control at the front of the court. After DC had about 8 game balls, Stefan clawed things back to 9/9 and unlike DC, didn't cock about and closed the game out at first time of asking. The 3rd looks close at 9/7 but to be honest DC was on the end of a lot of rallies controlled by Stefan and going down 2/1, DC was puffing and blowing. A bit of advice from Numbnuts to get back to a decent length was promptly ignored by DC before sense finally prevailled. At 5/5, a couple of tough rallies seemed to deflate Stefan and DC knicked the 4th. The 5th looked like it would be a scrap but DC got off to a strong start and Stefan's game started to leak errors. 9/2 to DC and grateful to get off with a win.
Grim Reaper v Neil
Now last week the Reaper was up against a young buck as fit as a butchers dog and this week was no different. Reaper in his usual dogged style went 2 zip down but scrapped his *rse off to get thing back to 2/2. A very tired Reaper came out in the 5th to see Neil moving as well then as he was in the first. The result was inevitable. Well played Neil and 2 points gained by the Reaper in my opinion.
Numbnuts v 'Mini Mortimer'
Actually saw all of this on (which is handy because I was marking it ) Match of the night without question. Very high quality game with a total contrast in styles. M/Mortimer played accurate stylish shots from the off and Numbnuts simply ran everything down (no change there then) Numbnuts worked his socks off to win the 1st. The second was at 4/4 when M/Mortimer reeled off 5 rallies which ended with rolling knicks. Very impressive ! Numbnuts then returned the compliment and ignored advice given by DC to get a better length before once again sense prevailed. perfect lengths followed by attacking boasts was the perfect tonic as a 9/2 scoreline showed. Into the 4th and M/Mortimer was once again playing some great squash but at 5/1 down, Numbnuts then played error free squash which in turn forced the errors from M/Mortimer. A tight 4th but Numbnuts came through for what was a very impressive win.
For a game which was strewn with lets, this remained a very enjoyable game to watch and both players kept a smile on their faces throughout. Good effort lads.
Anyone who has seen Hadley will know what I mean when I say he is the spitting image of Toby, except he's about 6 stone lighter !! (hence the word mini)
So a long evening with the final match coming off at 10.45.Poor old Steeden would have at this point pictured the beasting he was going to get when he got home. As for us , we drunk beer, ate food and went home. Sod the time !! |
