Report

Report:Once more banished to the dark side of the moon known to some as Old Dunstonians.
Captain Carrot Top took a back seat this week instantly provoking chaos within the ranks of the playing plebs. No scoring boards, balls or drinks or indeed keys to get in the bloody place. Not a great start especially as the Blackheath boys all turned up bang on time with only Numbnuts and myself to offer idle banter while someone marched back to Langley to get the above items. So a late kick off followed by some very long games ensured a finish close to Wednesday AM. (The sort of finish time that would have turned Girl Steeden into a quivering wreck !!)
If ever there was a set of scores that belied events on court, these were it. Some very long hard fought matches which could have gone either way.

Zimbabwean Worthog v Rich
First game back for the Warthog after a lengthy break so the last person he needed to play was Rich legging around the court like a Cheetah. Only saw the last game with Rich still going strong with his built in Duracells whilst Worthog was blowing out of his considerable *rse.
However, the score would suggest Worthog gave it a good go taking two close games. At the end Worthog lay collapsed proclaiming it was easier to fight off a pack of African hunting dogs back home than it was playing squash. Good effort big boy and well played Rich. (still got to be joking about that let Rich !)

Grim Reaper v Andy
Now I have seen the Reaper get out of many tight matches by the skin of his wotsits so I should know better but I admit I had him down for a loss in this one. As it turned out, this was the crucial match to swing the evening Langleys way.
Very tight cagey opener which Reaper sqeaked. Andy then came out strongly in the second making the Reaper work very hard indeed. At 7/2 Andy seemed to have the second wrapped up but much to Reapers credit he worked very hard but more importantly made Andy work just as hard to close the game out. The third was always going to be crucial and I must admit I was expecting Andy to take control of events but it seemed to me that Andy just took his foot of the gas a little while the Reaper was still at it full bore. 9/0 to Reaper. Andy seemed to lose confidence in the fourth and the Reaper went about his business in his usual deathly way.
A match strewn with lets but still a very good game to watch and mark. Credit to Andy, he was clearly frustrated by some of decisions DC made but he kept his head down and got on with it.

Debt Collector v Roald
The scoreline would suggest a pretty easy stroll for DC but this was most definately not the case. Lots of competative rallies but DC just kept things a little bit tighter and the drop shot for once was working almost without error. (Almost !)

Sweaty Sock v Phil
Didn't see any of this one but according to Numbnuts Phil was at his usual best on the retrieving stakes whilst Sweaty seemed to pick up a mystery injury in his Knee which left him baffled.
Fortunately DC knew the answer to this mystery condition. It's known as 'Too far south syndrome' which is a common ailement for Jocks living in the best part of England. Even more fortunate, DC knows the cure. Rub a foul smelling 6 month old haggis around the affected area and consume a large amount of battered Mars bars. Works every time and the only side effect is you can sometimes end up with ginger hair !

Numbnuts v Rich
Last on and everything to play for. Not suprisingly a huge amount of long rallies, stupid pick ups and huge dollops of honesty from Rich with some of his pick ups which looked fine to me. Rich won a hard fought first but Numbnuts gradualy tightened up his game as time went on and kept a reasonable control on things to close out the match 3/1. Really good game with both players taking a lot of credit for their effort and sporting attitude on court.

So a good match with a very late finish. Thanks to the Blackheath lads for bearing with us at the chaotic start. A good bunch of blokes who play hard but once it's all done and dusted, win or lose remain good company. No chance of them going down, their too good. Look forward to playing them next season.
