Report

Report:Park Langley's new team made their home debut this week, on the OD courts, looking to make amends for a humbling defeat last week away at Nuffield II's.

First up - Rich vs. John
Rich came out all guns blazing, flying into an 8-0 lead before seemingly deciding to play a completely different game to that which got him to 8-0 in the first place, only switching back once John had gamely fought back to 8-8. The 2nd game followed a similiar pattern and although Rich scraped it again, surely it would only be a matter of time before John capitalised upon this inconsistency. Sure enough a combination of John hitting some tight low drives into the nicks, and Rich tinning far too much, John completed a storming comeback and took the match 3-2. 1-0 to Poult Wood

Paul vs. Jake
Only saw bits of this as I was playing at the same time, though from what I'm told, once Jake had taken the first in relatively quick time, Paul decided to wake up and remember that he does a love a good rally! 3 games later and Paul had sealed what was in his words "A much needed victory". 1-1

Peter vs. Stuart
This was probably the most topsy turvy game of the night with the two players having completely contrasting styles of play. Stuart obviously had his weetabix this morning as he flew around the court retrieving what should've been dead balls time after time, frustrating Pete's cool and casual style of stroking the ball to all parts of the court. First game to Stu. Peter tightened up his game in the 2nd, consistently finding line and length, as well as drops that literally fell off the front wall and continued this through into the 3rd game to take a 2-1 lead. Apparently Stu had now recovered his breath from the first game and was once again zipping around the court hitting tight boasts and short drives, taking the 4th in quick time. After a bit of toing and froing int eh 5th at 2-2, Pete eventually ran away with it comfortably. Great game, 2-1 to PL

Ryan vs. Robin
Unfortunately I saw nothing of this game due to marking duties, but I'm told there was a combination of Robin playing very well, and Ryan having an uncharacteristic off day. Robin running out a 3-0 winner. 2-2!

Chris vs. David
And so to the decider. The first game was tight all the way through, with the gap never being more than 1 point between the players, until Chris tinned a forehand boast at 7-7 and David capitalised by winning the next 2pts and winning the first game 9-7. A quick word from his team informing Chris that this was actually the decider seemed to snap him into life, as the ball took a pounding, Chris sending bombs into nicks towwards the 2nd half of the 2nd game, taking it 9/5 and continuing in the same vein for the 3rd game to take a 2-1 lead. At this point I can only assume Chris wanted to emulate Rich's performance form earlier as he changed his game totally, surrendering into an 8-0 deficit, though not to take anything away from David who had himself tightened up and played some great drops and cross court drives. Winning service back, Chris went hell for leather, seemingly enjoying a bit of "conversation" with his opponent on route to a fantastic comeback, eventually winning 10/9 with more of his trademark bombs flying off the racket!

So the new boys 'Under 25s + Pete' (Sorry Pete!) managed to notch up their first win, thoroughly entertaining evening, all matches played to a very good standard and in good spirits. Credit to the Poult Wood boys who were all present before 7.45 despite the long journey. I just hope Robin managed to get home after an unfortunate problem with his car!
