Report

Report:Park Langley's 5th team took up their more familiar surroundings and rebranded themselves as 'Old Dunstonians 1' for the evening, welcoming Old Elthamians to the arena. Having only been able to field 3 players last week, it was a welcome comfort to have a full complement.

First on court was young Gina vs. Tim
Whilst Tim was in the changing rooms getting ready, Gina was already on court going through an array of warm up routines, wooing the onlooking spectators with "volley 8s" and other such aesthetics! To be fair to Tim, he was very much up against it from the word go, with Gina finding a perfect length from the word go and striking the ball very sweetly. Despite this, there was some good long rallies with excellent defence displayed by both players. Having squeezed a tight first game, Gina then raced through the 2nd in next to no time before again having to squeeze out the 3rd in which Tim refocused and applied some pressure of his own. Good win and 1-0 to PL

Rich vs. Steve
Possibly the match of the night this, Rich coming into it having been consistently inconsistent all season and Steve just recovering from a chest infection that has seen him coughing and spluttering for the last 7 weeks. A strangely disciplined Rich, of which has been rarely seen this season, came out in the first 2 games, playing controlled lengths and remaining on the most part error free at the front of the court. That said, the rally's were swinging in dominance like an over eager pendulum, with unbelievable retrieval being displayed by both players. Going 2-0 up, it would've seemed that if Rich just kept on going, he would surely see out a 3-0 win, however it's never quite that straight forward for me! Steve came out with a renewed never say die attitude and as he applied the pressure, the errors crept in more frequently until, almost inevitably, we were into a 5th game. The pace didn't let up, despite the 2 players evidently starting to tire and having faced and somehow saved 8 match balls, I finally saw out a 3-2 victory. Fantastic match up.

Chris vs Pat
I only saw about 3 shots of this match, but as I went on to court Chris had gained a 2-0 lead and looked pretty confident going into the 3rd. Having seen Pat play previously, and his description from his team mates of "Pat can lose 2 games in 5mins... and then win them back again in exacting fashion", I'm led to believe this is what happened as the match went into a 5th. At this point I have to assume that Chris went back to wham, bham thank you ma'am mode and closed out.

Ryan vs. Justyn
Literally saw nothing of this match as I was playing at the time, but I'm told it was a relentless performance from Ryan, efficiently going about his business on court.

Pete vs. Mehmet
Peter's been in a rich vein of form coming into this match, and his performances have been markedly improving each week and sure enough this continued. Possibly the best we've seen Pete play so far this season, and against a very good opponent in Mehmet too. Remarks from the balcony of "Very sharp" and "Great shot" were heard frequently, for both players, as the match wore one. Unfortunately for Mehmet, it seemed that having won the 3rd game 10/9 he just ran out of steam and Peter breezed through the 4th to see out the match for PL.

Good banter in the bar afterwards, wish Old Elts all the best for the rest of the season.
