Report: | Having pulled out a victory against the league leaders last week, the PL 'Under 25s + Pete' were in bouyant mood, despite now being in the chase position in the race for promotion. Knowing that Bromley were on home turf and expecting maximum points, the captain's message was simple - "Win your match but if you must lose, do it 3-2"
First on Chris v Karen
The unfamiliar surroundings of being on the main courts at PL obviously threw Chris slightly off kilter as he made an unusually slow start. That said, Karen was sending up lob serves that may well have been leaving the stratosphere, making life less than easy for Chris, whilst both players were struggling find to a decent length. A disjointed first game, Karen seeing it through 9-4. The best advice the PL support could offer was "Don't let her get service back!" and, by and large Chris took this on board and ensured that he tightened up his game and went through to take the next 3 games with more comfort, although at 8-0 in the 4th maybe both players wanted to stay on - Hand in/Hand out a total of 8 times!
Paul vs Peter
As I was marking, I didn't see the beginnings of this match. Playing on the furnace that is court 4, I can only assume that the rally's were long and hard (is there a joke there somewhere?) as the players were at 6-6 in the 2nd when Chris and Karen had finished their match! As we know, Paul, in his own words "Loves a rally" and rarely would Peter have seen so many of his inch perfect attacking boasts come back at him. The retrieving was paying off though, as Paul went on to take a 2-1 lead and was in the ascendency in the 4th, until Peter rescued and took it to a 5th. Half way through the game, maybe Peter got fed up of Paul retrieving everything as Paul took a bullet to the back of the knee from no more than 6ft away. Ouch! Some more furious rally's ensued but eventually Peter got the game, and the match. Scores 1-1 on the night
Ryan v Mandy
Again, this match took place at the same time as the 1st strings on court 4. When I started watching, Ryan had won the first game and was 6-0 up in the second, hitting some outrageous volley boasts, sending Mandy the wrong way on more than one occasion. It appeared to be a formality that Ryan would coast through. Mandy though, had other ideas and suddenly picked up her matchplay to take the game. The next 2 games were over before you could blink, and although I didn't see it, reports were that Ryan pulled this one out of the bag despite not looking as comfortable as the scoreline in the 5th would suggest. 2-1 PL
Rich v Peter
Coming into this fixture, yours truly had actually been in some relative form and this showed in the first 2 games, rattling through with some high pressure drives and tight boasts. What do they say about old habits though? Unfortunately they never really disappear, and the teams comments of "the old Richard is back" probably gives the most accurate description of what happened in the next 2 games. In the blink of an eye and some customary swearing at myself, scores were 2-2. Thankfully though, after a quick pep talk, Skippy managed to regroup and win through in the 5th.
Peter vs. Nick
Literally saw not a stroke of this game due to being on court at the same time, but it looks like 'no red meat Pete' had banished memories of last week and routinely went about his business to win in 3.
So despite a couple of scares and wobbles individually, the PL boys delivered on the brief, taking 19pts on the night and in doing so making sure that the race for promotion goes right to the final night. Well played to Nuffield, good friendly chat and banter in the bar afterwards! |
