Report:Bromley CC Vs Canons

Week 3 saw the meeting of Bromley rivals Bromley CC and Canons. Somewhat of a local derby in Squash terms, although not the same hatred shown in say a North London derby.

Both teams had recorded wins the previous week, so something had to give and it was Canons who seized the early initiative through their numbers 4 & 5.

Andy Brackstone took on Peter Willmor at 5, whilst Alistair took on Chris Butler at 4.

Andy, having spent the 5 mins prior to the game, disposing of Monday nights curry, began the first game sloppy. (No pun intended). The wily Peter seized on this and raced into a 7 - 0 lead in the first. Andy battled bravely and managed to improve his game, but Peters tricky boasts and drops around the front gave him the first game 9 - 3.

Andy changed his tactics at the start of the second, and managed to gain the upper hand over Peter in the early exchanges. Unfortunately Andy couldn't maintain his tight lengths and Peter ran away with the second 9 - 2. Clearly deflated by this Andy quickly lost the third 9 - 2. A resounding victory for Peter who showed that his tricky boasts and slow pace were too good for Andys' hard hitting.

Alistair took on Chris at number 4.

Prior to the warm up Chris was seen in the bar having a couple of cigarettes, although this proved to be nothing but a disguise as he comfortably won the first 9 - 5, leaving Alistair as the one puffing.

Alistair changed his tactics and began to slow it down in the second and won 9 - 1. Was this to be the turning point? Chris then began to up the pace in the third and go for his winners.
Alistair couldn't maintain his form and lost the game 9 -3. After the match Alistair complained of tiredness and lack of energy in the fourth. This was clearly evident as Chris won the fourth 9 - 3, giving Canons a 2 - 0 lead.
If only he had flu.....

Ian took on Richard at 2, whilst Lewis took on Sam at 1.

In form Lewis took on Sam Stabler, a player that he hasn't managed to beat in 3 outings. Lewis needed to change that if Bromley were to have any chance of winning this match. Lewis was focused and determined from the outset, not allowing Sam a chance to get in to any sort of rhythm. He moved Sam around at will, dropping him at the front and lobbing him to the back. He kept his game fast and tight and built himself a 2 - 0 lead, taking the first two games 9 - 4 and 9 - 2 respectively. Sam put up some resistance in the third, but Lewis was on fire and wouldn't be deterred from recording his first priory victory over Sam, taking the third 9 - 5.

Richard has shown this season that he's up for a battle, having gone to 5 games in each of his first two games of the season. Tonight's match against Ian was to be no different.

Ian sporting new go faster trainers, raced into an early lead in the first, moving Richard around at will, with hard crosscourts and deep lengths. Ian took the opening game 9 - 3. Ian started the second poorly, but Richard changed his tactics and began rallying consistently, and at the same time cutting out his errors that had blighted him in the first game. Richard fought off a late surge and won the second 9 - 5.

The game had definitely turned in Richards' favour, he began to run away with the third and led 5 - 0. Then after about 6 hand ins at 5 - 2, Richard began to tire, Ian turned the game around and won 9 - 5, a real turn around. The fourth game started closely, with Ian building an early lead. Richard again wouldn't lie down and fought back to lead 8 - 5. Then after a dodgy call by the marker, Richard sportingly served it out on game point. Ian then managed to get back into the game at 8 - 7, but Richard prevailed to win 9 - 7, and take the match into a fifth and final game. After an up and down match, lasting over an hour, the fifth game was going to come down to who could cut out the errors. The game was tight up to 5 - 5, but several errors at key points handed Richard the game 9 - 5 and the match 3 - 2. Thus giving Canons the overall victory and ending Bromley's unbeaten start to the season.

Although the match had already been won, there were still points and pride at stake. The Dutch Prodigy Michel took on Dave Leach at 3.

Michel was made to run and fight for every point by Dave, but Michel proved too quick and agile in the first, winning it 9 - 5. The second game started brightly for Michel, with him taking an early lead. Dave fought back, but couldn't over power Michel, as he took the second 9 - 4. Dave put up a brave fight in the third, making Michel move all over the court. Clearly tiring, Michel managed to lift himself for one final push, and held on to win the game 9 - 6.

Canons won the match 3 - 2, but like last week it could have gone either way, thus Proving what a tight league it will be this season.

Although Bromley CC lost the match, the after dinner meal certainly made up for the defeat. I challenge anyone to say that we don't have the best team meals in the league.
