Report

Report:A smash and grab raid was performed by Bexley 1 last night. The home team managed to snatch a 5-0 defeat from the jaws of a 3-2 win.

First on London jnr v Ford
I could almost copy and paste this from any of a number of other reports of these two. Ben was out of the blocks very quickly as usual, volleying everything, giving Steve no time to settle and generally making the game look ridiculously easy as normal. Steve took a long while to get the measure of this and struggled to find any sort of rhythm, leading to increasing frustration and a 0-2 deficit. Nevertheless, a prodigious amount of running and stepping up the attacking game, combined with a few more mistakes from Ben as he tired, saw the next two games taken by Steve. Once again, in time honoured fashion Steve got an early lead followed by losing the next 5 points. This was clawed back but a crucial lob out with Ben struggling seemed to turn it and despite Steve battling resolutely Ben ran out the winner.

Next door, Thompson v Green.
Saw nothing of this except the last 3 rallies. Martin was off to a flying start, but lost his way completely in the 3rd and 4th. The 5th was a battle royal and Martin nearly snuck it at the death. As he went for a low drive whilst semi losing his footing at match ball up, the ball caught the top of the line. The next point saw Matt pressure Martin into a mistake to take the match.

Next up Beevers v Masters (very) junior
Brad ran Darren out of this one. Despite Darren looking at times like he had control of the rallies, all too often a single poorly selected shot or Brad running a ball down and dispatching a low boast saw Darren's best efforts rebuffed. The pattern was consistent throughout the match and in the end Brad took it pretty comfortably. Darren was then off into the night as one of the new baby brigade (followed not long after by no.2 - Matt).

Next door, Robbins v Masters (not quite so) junior
This looked like it was going to be a fairly routine affair for JEJ as he strolled out to a 2-0 and 7-1 lead. A couple of minor disagreements about strokes against JEJ, followed by Josh slotting some good short shot winners, saw the tide gradually turn. JEJ (very unusually) became NQEJ (as in not quite enough). In the end Josh clawed his way back up the mountain to win it.

Last on Pratt v Steeden
I'm not too sure what has happened to WW these last two weeks. The early season maturity and much improved play has slid back into a combination of the old style lash and hope mixed in with looking less than bothered about the result. Still, after so many years of dealing with this, the one thing we all expect is the unexpected. To be fair, after a lecture from captain crocked at the end of the 2nd, Steve started to play much better to take the 3rd and looks to have only narrowly lost out in the 4th (I had to depart for more marking duties). In the end, Mark took it in 4 to complete a miserable evening for the home team.

A much depleted complement of personnel in the bar was bolstered by the usual insults and mickey taking of DC before the rest of us sloped off into the night to formulate plan B.
