Report: | Tough match up for Bexley with an opposition captain positively gloating at the fact he had 7 players to choose from (unheard of for tunbridge wells)
First up Ben vs James
Ben looked in no mood to extend this match longer than he had to as he took the first couple of games in double quick time although towards the end of the 2nd James started to extend the rallies with some unbelievable retrieving. The 3rd was the longest game but Ben just had enough to take it 9-6 and the match 3-0
Andy vs Jonny
Didn’t see much of this but a good performance from Andy playing his usual game involving running as little as possible and keeping the rallies nice and short, I came over in the 5th to a bit of confusion. Jonny was warming the ball up in the middle of the game? with Andy walking off the court, apparently it was cold, I enquired as to what was going on thinking the ball had burst but this was the original ball, in the Powell book of squash rules (a unique read) you are allowed to stop mid game and warm up the ball. Lots of confused faces later and the game resumed with Jonny winning it 3-2
Josh vs Colin
Youth vs experience in this one and the old boy took the first two games with some controlled squash and some fantastic nicks at the front on both sides, the next two games went to Josh after he tightened up and Colin tired. It was tight in the 5th up to 4 all until the legs finally gave up and after a few crucial tins from Colin, Josh took the match 3-2 (never in doubt!)
Poorly Brad vs Jolyon
Now, Brad likes a good hack, but in Jolyon we have someone who has been hitting the ball hard for a long time, this showed and Jolyon took the match comfortably 3-0. Looks like Brad has a serious case of “boy flu”
Mark vs Matt
At 2 matches all this was the decider, after watching Matt beat Tom last week some serious midweek training was undertaken by Mark and this seemed to pay off as late in each game he came on strong coming from 7-8, 4-8 and 2-6 down in each of the three games to take it 3-0 (only 4 points in it) and the match.
A good curry with a handful of participants including honorary dinner guest Masters senior and much discussion on Jonny’s take on the rules?! the evolvement of a Mote/Maidstone super team (Motestone) and the eligibility of players for the age groups, took a while but I think Jonny finally got it.
Next up, last game of the first half against Park Langley 2, another tough one thanks to the mid-season signings of manager Cotton.
