Report

Report:Feeling suitably refreshed from lightened journalistic as well as playing duties, your trusty scribe repaired to Langley Towers clutching trusty notepad to report on the visit of Bromley CC last night. A hot and balmy evening saw a close run match. The PL tail gunner has now absented himself to pastures foreign for many weeks, so the reserves were once again in action. BCC had turned up with a very strong sub in Tom Woods to make up for Sam Stabler's absence.

Battle commenced with London jnr v Baker.
After their 1st half encounter where Steve got embroiled in a marathon five setter within a few hours of getting off a 9 hour flight, he was keen to reverse the result. To start with it didn't look like it was going to happen as Neil played well to take a 6-0 lead. Steve hung in and somehow clawed it back to take the 1st and dominated the 2nd with a good attacking display. The 3rd saw an about face as Neil completely dominated the game, taking it to love. Back to the earlier level for Steve in the 4th with Neil making a few too many mistakes in response to sustained pressure. A good match.

Next door, Pratt v McMeckan.
This always looked likely to be the key tie, thanks to PL's strong top end and BCC's strong bottom end. Didn't see too much of it, but WW's analysis of the match was that he'd somewhat bamboozled James with his usual array of ridiculous trick shots. The latest wheeze is frying pan style topspin backhand volleys. Nonetheless, this time they were going up, and WW completed a very good victory in straight games.

Next up Lockyer v Woods.
Battle of the subs. A tough one here for Dan. Tom dominated the 1st and 3rd games, but Dan was a little unlucky not to take the 2nd after coming back from a big deficit to take it to a tie break. Walkabout done from Tom though, he eased onto the gas to complete a routine victory. Still, a bit more court mileage for Dan on the comeback trail.

Next door, Rich v Horder.
Adam looked to be getting back into some reasonable form here after his long layoff. A couple of mistakes at the death in the 1st saw Adam lose it, but after the 2nd was done a spirited comeback saw him take the 3rd. After this Matt stepped it up again and pressured his way to a good win.

And so to the decider - Robbins v Ryall.
An impressive display by JEJ as he soaked up Lewy's usual array of casual cross court nicks. A tee dominating performance saw Lewy scurrying to all corners of the court in his usual mobile fashion. Lots of trademark disguise and holds to offset the reduced athleticism these days was just the job for JEJ. Lewy should have taken the 2nd after leading 8-5, and both the other games were close, but the PL man completed a good win to secure the match.

Plenty of audience participation, particularly near the end of the final match when the 3rd team came across to watch proceedings.

Captain Crocked disappeared to the gym to try and get at least some exercise after the match, and upon returning to pick up the tab, the PL team had mostly melted away into the night. Still, a good evening, with the right result for PL.
