Report: | There were no Gold medals for attendance for Bexley IIs, who were literally just that on a balmy August evening at Dulwich. Situated not far from the Herne Hill Velodrome (home to the London ’48 Olympic Cycling) the battle commenced in true Olympic spirit with no referees and a sense of fair play all round. Am sure the football Premiership will pick up the baton this weekend, and promptly drop it rather like the 4 x 100 guys.
It was a dead heat on the court as Tim beat Tom 3-0 and Jim beat Duane 3-0, but the gauntlet was laid down by the visitors and doubles commenced. The Dulwich pair synchronised well in the first to lead one-nil, but the Bexley pair jumped into life in the second and opened up a lead coming off the bend. However, clearly aware that the event had no tickets left for sale (or even on sale) the Dulwich pair dug deeper than Misty May (for those not well informed American Beach Volleyball Gold Medallist not a host of Men & Motors) pulling back to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Despite the prompt start and the smaller teams it still needed a dip for the line after a couple of social beers to pick up the Olleys before the red flagged was waved. There was no sign of any rings, Onion or Olympic, but still a very enjoyable night.
So it was Hawaii Five-Hoy for the home side but thanks to the dynamic duo for making the trip from the SE corner of Team GB.
