Report: | A hot and steamy night saw PL1 entertain Bromley LTC last night. A long and gruelling encounter with plenty of effort expended on both sides.
First up Rich v Jeal(S).
Not really one for the purist it has to be said. Sam seemed to get very irked early on, mainly with the type of shots Adam was playing. The ball spent the whole match pinging around with boasts all over, "length" shots hitting the top of the back wall full pitch - you get the idea. Despite this and a few careless mistakes when in control of a rally Adam took advantage of Sam's increasingly despondent look to get PL off the mark.
Next door Robbins v Jeal(T).
The usual entourage of acolytes were in attendance, presumably hoping to see a grudge match after the 1st half fiasco, but Ted had to face a rejuvenated JEJ with Steve off injured. This was a master class from JEJ again from the bits I saw. He had Ted chasing all over the court. To be fair, Ted looked to be playing and moving as well as always, but in spite of a major blip in the 2nd where he didn't get a hand-in, Ted battled hard but ultimately to no avail. JEJ's appearance belies impressive fitness levels, and as a match player they don't come much better. A good win.
Next up, Thompson v Shaw.
Didn't see too much of this. Martin had rushed away to get changed and ready to play as the prospect of marking the game above loomed(!) and after a slowish start seems to have got into his stride, and with a few games under his belt on his 2nd holiday, did enough to suppress Rob's decent hitting and thereby allow PL to take the tie.
Next on London snr v McManus.
For the umpteenth time these two battled it out for a very long time. Gordon got off to his customary start. Once again, with the sighter game out of the way (although there were 23 hand-in/outs at 5-0!) it all looked very different as the author was forced to claw back big deficits to get a 2-1 games advantage. All change in the 4th as the author having carved out a 6-1 lead promptly lost the plot on shot selection as Gordon charged back. A tight 5th saw Gordon just about in control to record a marathon win (4 games to 3 to the author in PAR mode)! Gordon's after match summary seemed apt: "not bad for 111" (combined ages).
Last on Pratt v Patel.
Steve has apparently been overdoing the tennis and hurt his shoulder in the process. After nabbing the 1st, it seems as if the traffic turned ever more in Ket's direction, with the last two games being comprehensive. Didn't see any of this as I started before it and finished after it.
So, a hard fought victory for PL to maintain a place at the top of the also-ran category. The Jeal family decided to dine on their own while the match was still going and then departed, but there was still a reasonable contingent left in the bar as the author arrived at the meal table at 11pm! |
