Report: | PL3 arrived at DL for their first experience on the new (read makeshift) courts clearly apprehensive following winter season reports of ice box conditions. Much to the contrary we were all treated to playing on two air-free, energy sapping sweat boxes. But the home team at least would take that every time given the previous arctic challenges.
Snow v Lennox – summer captain Snow and Lennox set off at a steady pace with some long rallies but with Lennox finding his lengths quickly the first was taken relatively comfortably. Things were evened up after a competitive second which the home skipper raise his game and find some winners but it was at some energy cost. The break allowed time for some recovery which even propelled Snow to 5-1 up in the third but at that point the fuel light came on and Lennox stayed strong with some decent retrieving and no errors to come back and take the game in one hand. The same theme continued into the fourth. There was a glimmer of resistance towards the end but the writing was on the wall and the game was duly closed out. Enjoyable, tough fought game.
Lark v Burnett - didn’t see any of this one but by all accounts a slow start by Lark saw him go one down quickly then two despite a more evenly contested second. However the tables were quickly turned in the third and fourth to set up a tight fifth that saw Lark nick it 10-9.
Whiteman v Lockyer – Dan’s a man whose form seems to blow as hot and cold as the DL courts. Unfortunately for him this was one of his off days, quickly explained away by a lack of much if any squash over the last few months, and he found Pete in a determined and unforgiving mood which resulted in a pretty convincing 3-0 victory.
Gilmore v Bushell – I didn’t see too much of this on account on having to make the long round trip to the bar a few times, but Ray’s a wily old fox that has tripped up many a DL player in the past and this maybe coupled with Nathan’s lack of much squash recently saw him take the first. However from that point Gilmore seemed to get into his stride to take the second game and quickly wrap up the third. By the fourth he was moving well and playing some quick and accurate to squash to complete a strong performance and clinch the points for DL.
Carr v Davies – last on and with the points decided it looked like Carr was keen to get finished and move on to the jacket potatoes as he moved to a two-nil lead with an attractive assortment of volley drops and lobs. This was in spite of flirting with the service line on almost every serve and on more than one occasion not making it – the softest of all unforced errors, and surely unwise when your captain’s marking the game. Luckily for Carr the DL squad is quite small otherwise a week off to “go and have a think about how to serve” might be in order. Anyway Davies managed to adjust to the deliberately slow speed of the game to come back and take the third and fourth games and set up a tight finish. The decider was a closely fought one with the momentum going both ways. Carr clawed his way back to 7-all and within touching distance of the finish line but at the big moment managed to serve out, again, to a collective groan from the home team. The door duly left wide open Davies stepped in to help himself to the win.
So a pleasing start to the summer season for DL with a win that had a hint of the unexpected about it, and some good beers and chat in bar after.
