Report: | A close fought encounter with the new look Sundridge Park ended at 10.45p.m. with Stuart winning the first string match 3-2. The theme however was much the same with the other matches and in particular the third and fifth rubbers. Chris Wilkes at number 3 contrived to lose a 6-0 lead followed by a 7-4 lead to go 0-2 down to Andy Redfern. Having clawed his way back Chris then held two match balls but the voodoo (otherwise known as the opposition) struck and Andy saved the match balls to take the game 3-2.
Pip Johnson is a tremendous player new to the club and the 2nd team. Commanding the T he put Peter to the sword and taking a 2-0 lead. However Peter, renown for his fighting qualities, did just that and fought back to 2-2. Both players looked shattered as they sparred for the spoils of the fifth game. Pip however was the more accurate of the two with his persistent driving to a good length giving him the match, but only just.
The fourth string match was an interesting affair with Ken hitting the ball hard and trying to move his opponent around the court quickly. This almost worked as Ken won the third game having lost the first two to accurate hitting and finishing by his opponent, fresh from the national club plate final in Nottingham, no less. It really is a truism that playing competitive matches against high standard opposition will improve your game, which I found helped me after my match in Nottingham. And so it proved here with the fourth game going the way of Dulwich through forced errors after a lot of hard work on court.
Tom had kicked off proceedings against the erstwhile number 1, Justin, now taking a deserved rest at number 2, though in this league there are some tough games at second string. Tom won the first game but Justin then worked him out and varying the pace romped home 3-1.
The nail biting finish was worthy of this long standing encounter. The number 1 match went on court with the scores level at 2-2. Stuart has now played Ray three times and having beaten him twice before, we reasonably assumed he would do it again. Well Ray had other plans. His difficult short game started to work and frustrate his more orthodox opponent. Stuart though will never stop running and his steady game eventually paid off with a 3-2 victory.
Olley's had closed and we were three whole minutes too late when placing our order at 10.03 p.m, when having suddenly realised the time a call was put through, but too late. So Pizza Express obliged with some of their finest and we rounded off the night with pizza and more beer.
Now lets hope that I have got my nominations and order correct after last week's debacle. |
