Report: | Despite the clash with the kiss-ball it was agreed to keep to the original schedule and both teams managed to field near full strength sides as DL hosted Dulwich 3 on another warm evening in the Warehouse.
Whiteman v Armstrong. Clearly heeding the warning over the consequences of late finishes the away man did everything possible to ensure him and his team a hot meal by making short work of Pete wrapping things up tidily in three prompt games, which the skipper didn’t see due to marking next door and nor did many others whose heads were firmly glued behind the courts to CatchUp tv.
Tidy was not the adjective to be used for Smith v Bates' fifth string match. In cricket parlance you’d call it aerosol and I don’t think either of these two would want to see their pitch maps. Let’s call it scrappy and move on. 3-1 Dulwich.
Petronzio had to extricate himself from a rather touching teammate headphone-share to get on court but that didn’t stop him moving to a two nil lead. The atmosphere was fairly distracted on the sidelines though and even a rally call from the Dulwich player wasn’t enough to get those heads out of the iPhones. It wasn’t until 8-3 down in the fourth that the home skipper was really able to muster up some meaningful fight but it made for a great game which saw three match balls come and go for Petronzio and the set-1 gamble very nearly pay off. The Dulwich man was tiring by the fifth but it was still hard fought before Snow took it 9-4 to get out of jail with a win.
That dragged out match meant Gilmore v Kettle was completely missed but seemingly after giving up the first Gilmore stepped up a gear and lasted the course to complete a 3-1 win. In his new employment capacity as a fitness trainer it was revealed later that he’d already had one workout earlier in the day, because he was “bored at work”. Note for the DL boys – should future losses be incurred this is not on the list of acceptable excuses.
Carr v Robinson was therefore the decider but like much of the night it lacked a bit of edge and focus. Perhaps this is a disservice to Jack who was finding some good angles and playing some decent squash to claim a three-nil with relative comfort to take the points for Dulwich.
Thanks to the Dulwich boys for getting there in good time, their handsome reward being hot jacket potatoes and a fully functioning bar, which are not the givens that you might expect and despite the loss it was good to finish at a sensible time for some chat in the bar.
