Report

Report:Having lost Jon Barnes to the 1st team and Chris Clark to a music concert Dulwich saw Bromley CC turn up with their A team whilst we had our A minus 2 team. First on was Chris Wilkes against Richard Kimpton. Chris playing with cool composure threaded his way to a 3-1 victory in the manner of Andres Iniesta orchestrating the Spanish midfield. Richard unfortunately came up against a man in form but put up a good fight to turn this into an interesting match. No buffon he tried to move his opponent around and succeeded in the second game but Chris soon adjusted and took the match.

Next on was John Lane against Tom Steibelt who had fainted several times the previous day whilst being immunized for his tour to South America. Tom had recovered fully as he ran his opponent down with dogged determination taking the match 3-2. John lost the first game but policed the T well in the next to take that. The match then surged from one end to the other with all four corners being regularly visited by both. Ultimately the chemicals that had caused the fainting must have been acting in reverse or maybe the Higgs Boson had got hold of Tom but either way he took the match in five.

Meanwhile I played Stewart Gotts. Having been inspired by watching Chris I managed to fluke a few shots which took Stewart by surprise and gave me a 3-0 win. This was not as easy, however, as the score suggests. Stewart is a tenacious opponent and physically strong. Had a few of his shots hit their target then the story may have been different. Only problem is he will be up for the return and I expect that to go to five as I had expected this one to.

Stuart Empson versus Tom Stone produced three great games of which Stuart won one, could have won two but failed by the height of the tin and then lost the fourth by a long way by which time Stuart was a spent force. Stuart played his brand of squash producing tight drives and great retrieving against Tom's attacking squash. Tom was ultimately too strong for him taking the match 3-1.

Pip had his first meeting with Andy Brackstone and proved too strong for the big man. Pip is young and fast. Big Andy is not as young or as fast as he might have been once upon a time. But Brackstone made up for this by sharing his theory on America and its demography by reference to the Mayflower and genetics with the rest of us at dinner. Hilarious.
