Report

Report:I don't want to steal Clives' thunder, but I'd thought I'd just put a short note from Kent-Squash resident sports writer.
Having read Clives' match report, he has grasped not only the wit that I deliver in my reports, but also an incredible eye for detail.
He has covered all the main points of another defeat for Bromley CC, and I feel I can add nothing to improve on the report.
However, our next game is against BBGB, I'm already sharpening my pencil.
Enjoy the below report

Captain (Original sports writer, physio, fitness instructor, motivator, treasurer etc)

Not feeling quite as chirpy as Anon (read M.(Pretty boy) Lennox) after this week's match, but nevertheless not a bad match for PL.

I'll get this out the way first to appease Ian - we had to put up with a fire alarm and club evacuation (into a very cold atmosphere, until the inestimable Tony Beddoe arrived hotfoot from his comfy chair to fix the problem). This led to a longish delay in the middle of the match, totally destroying the Bromley boys concentration, but hey, s**t happens!

Anyway, on to the match. First up Adam Rich v Dave Stacey and Mark Sheldon v Andy Brackstone. Dave started his match in fine form. Adam actually played pretty well, but Dave dominated from the front of the court, putting away anything loose.

From the second game onwards though, there was a turnaround. Adam improved his length shots and Dave seemed to lose interest. Apart from a bit a comeback in the 4th that remained the pattern, with Adam running out the winner.

Mark once again used his tactical nous (and according to Andy - dodgy shots) to extricate himself from game ball down in the 1st. After that he got into his stride, and eased his way through each of the next two games for a decent 3-0 win.

So, two up and everything looking rosy for PL. Cue fire alarm. It turned out to be too many people showering at once in the men's changing rooms, and in classic PL fashion, no-one could find the key to the fire alarm control box. After about 20 mins of mind numbing noise from the alarm, Beddoe rescued us from having to concede the match, and on we went.

Your intrepid correspondent and Ian McMeckan (Bromley's resident coach, physio ... whatever else he claims) took to one court while Matt Gill and Dutch Prodigy, I believe he's called, took to the other.

Ian will probably want to forget his match. He never really got into his stride, and made rather too many mistakes when the opportunities arose. I think he'd have preferred a hard fast game, but the fare on offer was rather more float and drop.

Matt and Michel meanwhile proceeded to have a battle. Matt got off to a good start, squeezing through a tight 1st. Michel got into his stride thereafter, winning the next two with some ease.

Matt's coaching staff took him to one side at this point, exhorting him to attack to a length and other sage nuggets of wisdom. This he duly did, and sneaked the 4th. Despite the advice to carry on the good work, Michel accelerated away to complete a good win.

This left what turned out to be the match of the night. London jnr v King Lewy. This is their umpteenth encounter this year, with Steve shading most of them, often in tight close fought matches.

After a trip to Barcelona followed by a week skiing (and 45 mins watching Real Madrid!), Steve felt perfectly prepared. It's a tough life as a student, but what can you do ?

Steve controlled the 1st and 3rd and Lewis the 2nd and 4th as the match yo-yoed one way and the other. This set the scene for the 5th. This was a very entertaining game, with both players hurling themselves around every part of the court. Long rallies ensued, one concluded with a King Lewy speciality (spins round the opposite way - not looking at the ball, and hits an unreturnable winner off the frame). Still, he does this shot with monotonous regularity, so it's clearly intentional.

Lewis went match ball up at 8-7 but overdid the next attempted winner (having been really going for it up to this point). Steve capitalised to see out the match 10-8.

All in all a good night for PL. Resident whirlwind and all round good egg is waiting in the wings to make his comeback so he tells me, so look out "mighty Hill" as we scrap for the minor places.

Someone has to try to put a dent in "pretty boy's" all conquering heroes.
