Report: | An enjoyable but competitive derby this match proved to be. The early pace was set by Jon taking on Antonio with a 3-0 win in under half an hour. Unlike the commentator at the Olympics who exclaimed that a British lady weightlifter had a great snatch there were no gaffes by the 2nd team number 1.
Next on was the match of the night and as in every contest between these two teams it involved Ian Armstrong. The difference this time was that I was not his opponent and instead he played Chris Wilkes who had only recently returned from a tour of his own in a study of the local beers from Poland to Brixton. Ian swept to a 2-0 lead before Chris found his touch and fought back to 2-2. The fifth saw Ian tire and Chris play some sublime touch shots from all parts of the court to win 3-2.
Olly versus Alex produced a match with long rallies as a result of the fitness of both players and in particular Alex's speed around the court. However Olly's control and experience saw him him home 3-1.
Tom back after some time out played Jack, both being in the same team last winter. Tom won the first game whilst Jack found his range. Then it was all one way traffic - hit ball in nick - seems to be Jack's motto as he is allergic to running on a squash court or any form of exercise it would seem. Not a bad way to play especially when it leads to vostory as it did here, 3-1.
That left Stuart versus Dave Kettle. Dave's aggresive style against Stuart's line and length. The line and length won the day at 3-1, but only just and a fifth would have been interesting but only for the players. The spectators with one eye on the clock were heading for the bar, grub and home. |
