Report

Report:Dulwich 2s arrived at the Warehouse Arena for the final game of the season to find that already the courts were already starting to display some of their winter characteristics, but did nothing to prevent some highly competitive games.

Whiteman v Ruff – Pete nicked the first, as is his customary fashion. Then proceeded to lose the next three, as is his customary fashion.

Snow v Barnes – lots of good quality at the top of the Dulwich order meant that whether it was a rematch with Clarke or first run against uni stablemate Barnes it was always going to be tough one for the home skipper. Barnes took the first relatively comfortably but against expectation this wasn’t to continue with Snow scrapping to take the second and the third as the away man showed some frustration at the speed of the court (I think) and an unexpectedly high level of unforced errors. The momentum continued into the fourth and at 5-3 up it a real upset looked on the cards. But the sight -or the thought at least- of the finish line does funny things sometimes and has taken many an underdog down. Barnes seized the initiative, went back to the top-of-the-Dulwich-order basic of all out aggression, and went through to take a hard fought match.

Miller v Dogra – the following match on the court was certainly a different tempo. Nev’s first and last game of the summer was didn’t trouble the match scorer (it only troubled the marker on two occasions) but it was good to see the club coach on court, especially in full complementary DL stash.

Carr v Wilkes – verdict on the sidelines after the home man rattled through the first was that it was the best he’d played in a while. Whether he also got white line fever (two games out) or Wilkes got his game head on I don’t know, but either way he ran out 3-1.

Lark v Empson – despite more tales of all day Sunday drinking Lark was on good form and seemed determined to do his best to reverse the 3-0 scoreline from the first half. He too seemed to have saved his best squash of the season for the last match and, showing no obvious effects of the weekend’s liver rinsing, covered some extraordinary ground to really turn the tables. A long, hard fought second seemed to take it’s toll on the Empson and Lark closed the match out 3-0 in what was a pleasing way to level up the head to head.

A later finish also meant a return to bad old days of dealing with early kitchen closures but it didn’t dampen the evening even if it was coupled with the inexplicable lack of draught beer, but I guess you get what you pay for in the DL corporate wheel, or not…. Anyway, some good chat in the bar after was characteristic of the whole season which has been thoroughly enjoyable on the court and off, good work everyone.
