Report: | “Oh what a wonderful morning, oh what a wonderful day, dum de dum de do da”, just couldn’t wait to put this match report in…
Okay here we go. The league table had recently taken a turn for the worse with Cannons capitalising on Biggin Hill’s upset at Tunbridge Wells two weeks previous, and the spare week for Hill last week. I say capitalise, they actually got a shameful walkover at DulwichSki where others had to fight the wroth of Tim Garner and the likes.
Still, leading into this match Biggin Hill had a game in hand over Cannons and the triumphant team would be certain to occupy the prestigious No.1 spot. In other matches, the highflying team of ringers that we know as 'Bexley', were taking on DulwichSki in a must win crunch match if they were to have any chance of catching the Biggin Hill runaway train.
The Cannons boys turned up for battle at the hallowed ground of Biggin Hill looking a little too eager for Hill’s liking. There were rumours that Cannons’ ‘in and out’ of form No.2 (Richard Kimpton) was injured and their ‘bearded lady’ No 3 (Dave Leach) also was struggling. Fortunately for Cannons, they were just rumours and in fact both players were fighting fit and in fantastic form.
The number 5’s kicked off first with Biggin Hill’s legend (and still in his eyes Club Champion) Stuart Clarke, against Cannons’ South African Darren Beevers. It took no time at all for the Club Champion to get into his former stride literally brushing aside the Springbok in the first two games. As far as the gallery was concerned, game set and match for the Club champion and one nil to the mighty Hill. It turns out this was not to be as the Springbok sprung to life stealing the next two games, but was eventually overpowered by our resident Club Champion. Well done Mr. Clarke, a welcomed return.
On the opposing court was a battle of the oldies (No.4’s) with Hill’s Ray (the Debt Collector) Bushell against Cannons’ wily cat (Peter Willmor). Again like the match on the opposing court, Hill’s Debt Collector (and oldest man on the court) took the first two games with relative ease but then seemed to get sucked into a short game that only Willmor (and Macmanus) could ever understand. Despite losing the third, the Debt Collector raised the ante and recovered the fourth to eventually win 3-1. A very good win for Bushell silencing his many critics.
So with the match poised at 2-0 to Hill it looked promising but certainly not full gone.
The number 2’s ventured on down with Hill’s loveable (and dare I say it handsome) Mark Lennox, against the sure fire power and consistency of Cannon’s wannabe No.1 Richard Kimpton. This match had been talked up by the masses for some time - Lennox with his 100% record for the whole season, and Kimpton with his jammy three two’s. Both players keen to uphold their records were in no mood for taking prisoners.
Despite Lennox’s problematic back and leg injuries, he soon disposed of Kimpton for just 3 points.
The No.1’s then took to the court. Well Cannons’ Sam Stabler did whilst Gordon (fashionably late) McManus did a few more stretches to warm the old bones up. This game wasn’t seen by the editor but by all accounts was quick firing match seeing Hill’s McManus leading two one in games. Stabler took the fourth to level the match and thus giving the Cannon’s boys a glimmer of hope. Unfortunately short lived, as Hill’s monumental Mcmanus won the fifth to bring the evening’s tally to a fine four nil. Great result for McManus overturning the last three nil loss to Cannons’ big man.
Last up were the No.3’s with Hill’s good ole John Lane (Laney as he loves to be called) against Cannons’ ole’ faithful, Dave Leach. To say ‘Laney’ was up for this one would be a slight understatement – a recent diet of raw meat ensured he was that raging bull again. Crash bang wallop and Laney had taken the first two games with little resistance from a somewhat startled Leach. The third game however saw Laney on his haunches gasping for air as it seemed the adrenalin was running low – that and the rubber ring around his waist seemed to slow the big man. The match was levelled at two games all before Laney pulled out one last charge to win the fifth in not a great deal of style – very good win all the same.
So, a big ‘nur na na nuna’ (thumbs on ears and hands flapping and everything) to Cannons as the immaturities of the Biggin Hill continued on right up until the match report…
