Report

Report:NOTE: Just for the avoidance of confusion, the no.1 slot situation was an agreed solution (that subsequently became a bit of a misunderstanding between the two captains - NOT a no show)

Ho ho ho. After a communication breakdown that would have made Led Zeppelin proud, a jet lagged London jnr was allowed to get some much needed shut eye as PL2's Wrecking Ball declared himself unavailable lastminute.com. So, with the 3rd team looking on for the first round of matches as they girded their lions (sic) for their Xmas curry fest the much delayed local derby got underway, with abbreviated numbers.

First on Nickalls v Burnett.
Fergus would no doubt have been glad to bypass this one, but having been called up as a 2nd team reserve, he proceeded to put in a good solid shift, and despite another battling performance from Tom, had a bit too much court craft to get things off to a good start for the 2nds. He was then to be seen with phone in hand presumably trying to track down where his teammates had absented themselves to, so he could join them.

Next door Pratt v Grey.
This was a very swift affair. Steve was clearly not out to take any prisoners on the night and used his youth and speed to full advantage, never really giving Simon a sniff of a chance. Over in double quick time to put the 1sts back in the driving seat.

Next on Robbins v Young.
JEJ looked in big trouble right from the off in this one. Zeb had somehow managed to retain some energy after some titanic clouting of the ball in the knock up and proceeded to take full advantage of JEJ's almost total lack of mobility - the legacy of injuries sustained in the last couple of matches. After going 2-0 down though, JEJ showed how he's earned the moniker by turning the tables and using his racket skills to claw his way back to victory.

Last on London snr v Peel.
After the obligatory wait for Nick to fully prepare himself for the fray, the senior citizens battle commenced with the author getting off to a good start. However, the wheels rather came off after the 2nd as the author sluggishly plodded on to a 5th and deciding game, while Nick capitalised despite apparently not feeling in very good shape. A major refocusing exercise by the author coupled with some mistakes off easy balls from Nick saw the author back in the driving seat to take the decider fairly convincingly.

So, at last a win for the 1st team. Hopefully personnel will all be fit and available for the 2nd half after 50% of an annus horriblis in the 1st half. The remaining troops repaired to the bar to witness Zeb downing any spare food going (quite a bit as it happened). Much talk ensued about what to do next season, with the general consensus being that one good team might be better than two relegated ones (an extensively paraphrased version of WW's verdict which is not suitable for family consumption)!
