Report: | Dulwich 1st team were back on the title campaign trail after the mid-term break. In the opposition at the Giant Arches fortress were new kids on the block Canterbury from fields far away, who were missing talisman Duane who allegedly got caught in Hurricane Sandy and fell off a really high wall outside his house. Mmmm, been drinking sir?
The first match up was always going to be a titanic tussle, with Neil having edged out John by 10/9 in the fifth last time round and so it proved. Both players started at a cracking pace, but having snuck the first Neil let slip an 8/5 lead in the second to leave the two protagonists neck and neck in the polls. John started the stronger in the third to lead 2/1, but Neil came out firing in the fourth to tie things up. Neil continued in the same vein to lead 5/0 in the fifth but John wasn’t done and pulled it Barack to 4/5 before Neil was able to close out a great game of squash in 5.
Will started brightly against the youngster in the line up, but Sam wasn’t going to let him have the keys to the White House without a fight and rallied hard from 0/5 in the opener to lose it 9/6. The second was a one-way Willwind as he raced to 8/0 and the game for the loss of a point. The third was again more competitive but it was the elder statesman (never thought I would say that about Will) who held his nerve to edge it 9/7.
Next up Humberto & Malcom locked horns once more. The first was close as Humberto kept a close eye on Malcom’s Swing state and managed to cope with what was being thrown at him and sent back a similar strategy. However, as the match wore on it was Humberto Mit no idea what shot was coming next as Malcom unlocked his full arsenal and showed that attack was the best form defence policy. Lifting the ball in the cool conditions, he would then unleash tracer like shots to finish the Rally off in impressive style and ran out a winner in four.
Jim & Joe have never been Running mates before, but enjoyed a competitive battle albeit with Jim always tending to have the upper-hand in the non-televised Debate about who owned the ‘T’. Joe grafted hard but could quite get across the finishing line to claim a game, so it was Jim who claimed the win for the home side. Last up Tim & Tom entertained the dwindling crowd with a first paced match, which need to be, as the late night temperature dropped and the ball stayed in the corners! Tom led 6/1 in the first as Tim’s cavalcade took a while to get going, fortunately doing so before curtain came down on the first game. The next two were equally tight marginals, even, but the Dulwich captain managed to secure them both and the match.
There was no Presidential banquet, but Olleys aides managed to rustle-up a mean fish and chips before the Canterbury boys headed back across Romney Marshes. As always an enjoyable battle, whether they are flying the Stars & Stripes in Rodmersham or Canterbury colours.
