Report

Report:After an early season break of two weeks it was back to business for PL1 as they entertained Bexley. After the usual scurrying around trying to get a team together, 5 players were acquired and both teams sported slightly different line-ups to normal.

First on, Nickalls v Badger.
A good game this, considering Matt has been away from a squash court for a fair while and Tom is on (another) injury comeback trail. For a good while it looked like a great result was on the card for PL as Tom capitalised on Matt's ring rust to go two games up. A bit of a loss of the initiative in the second half of the 3rd was the turning point really. Matt got in front and took the 4th game without Tom getting a hand-in. A regroup in the 5th saw Tom take a good lead and get it back on track, but Matt stepped it up to dominate the last half a game and complete a good comeback to win.

Next door, Pratt v Steeden.
Didn't see (or surprisingly hear) any of this one but my spies tell me WW played well to overcome another reluctant participant trying to nurse a dodgy ankle. At one point PL were two up on both adjoining courts and all looked rosy. WW held on well despite a comeback attempt, to claim his first victory over Mark, a fact that he was delighted to spend the rest of the evening discussing with anyone who'd listen. Also awarded himself the player of the night award instituted by him to celebrate this victory.

Next up, London snr v Donelan.
Sadly, the less said about this the better. The author got off to a good start but as the game wore on allowed frustration with a number of things to get a hold. From there on Christian's crisp hitting particularly on the volley proved to be a bridge too far, completing another win for Bexley.

Next door, Thompson v Green.
Only saw the latter stages of this one, and despite a hotly contested first two games Martin was on the wane by the time I started watching. This was not helped by going through 4 (count 'em) attempts at different squash shoes. His own were consigned to the bin and various other borrowed pairs tried and discarded. By the 4th Matt was rather dictating play and ran out the winner.

Final match of the night, Robbins v Ford
An entertaining spectacle as might be expected between these two with a large gallery present to witness proceedings. JEJ started the match with real intent taking the 1st, but sat back a little as Ben stepped it up to take the 2nd. The 3rd was nip and tuck the whole way with vintage stuff from both protagonists. Ben sneaked it and after a lights out delay wrapped up the 4th suspiciously quickly when last orders was announced in the middle of the game!

So, another unfavourable PL result. Many team mergers and mucho restructuring has left the division looking remarkably strong and PL1 will be under the cosh for some time yet I fear. Good banter in the bar as Matt G surprised Matt B with many a jolly jest around setts and TB, the latter being stunned as he'd never heard anything like this in all his years ...
