Report

Report:A strange if eventful evening last night as Bromley CC visited PL. A definite "nearing end of season" feel to proceedings.

First on: London snr v Horder.
The author having finally connected the dots and played a bit more in the preceding week was off to a good start as Matt made his customary slow start. This continued throughout the first two games. Perhaps the highlight of the evening occurred in the 3rd game though, as the author was sent the wrong way and then executed a pirouette and horizontal "dive" to return the ball. The end of this rally saw London jnr (marking) paralysed with laughter for several seconds at this turn of events. Anyway, the previous pattern was reinstated in the 4th for the author to get the team off to a good start for a change.

Out on court 4: Nickalls v Pyne.
Didn't see any of this, but Adam is a pretty spectacularly handy substitute no.5 and proved to have a bit too much for Tom who felt he was just starting to get the hang of proceedings and play better in the 3rd. Too little too late though, and Adam then had the disgruntling experience of being refused a drink at the bar as the new PL home team only ordering took effect (thanks to whoever it was that caned one of the other team's bar bill last week)!

Back in civilisation: London jnr v Baker.
I came in at the start of the 2nd in this one. Steve had let an 8-4 lead get away from him in the 1st and was looking like someone who really needs a break from squash for a bit. A close 2nd once again slipped away at the death and the 3rd was an exercise in keeping sufficient mental control to avoid embedding the racket in the ceiling. This combined with Neil playing some good stuff saw BCC level the match as the next match (below) finished at around the same time.

Out in the sticks: Pratt v McMeckan.
Didn't see any of this, but James apparently did not take to court 4's sandpaper finish walls too well. Having obviously had a bad day anyway, his after match statement went something along the lines of "I may have been a bit of a baby today but I want to register an official complaint about that court". Join the club! This kind of talk didn't cut much ice with his teammates however. Adam's solution was "hit the ball straight then". Sam wished the court record to emphasise the "baby" bit. The 3rd was over with only a single hand in for James as WW added to the PL points tally.

And so to the decider: Robbins v Stabler.
This was close for a game, with lots of being sent the wrong way for both players, and lots of short rallies with good winners saw JEJ take it. In about the middle of the 2nd Sam pulled up with a recurrence of an old groin strain and did well to complete the match, looking like it was going to be a retirement at 0-1 in the 3rd, but eventually soldiering on on one leg (pretty effectively it has to be said), to complete the match.

And so a rare win for PL, albeit with a paltry points total. Much discussion in the bar about the trials and tribulations of the early morning routines (titter ye not missus) of various other halves. All in all the usual friendly encounter with the BCC boys.
