Report: | A late start to this match due to James' bike breaking down and hence Graham having to collect James having already set off the other way with Stuart. All very complicated, as it turned out James' bike had broken down the previous day, so Nanu who had been drafted in then drifted out, but eventually we managed to herd the Bexley boys onto court to play some squash. First on were the number 1 seeds. Ron looked strong ghosting on court to warm up and started well. Chris was fast having played a bit recently and got faster to take the game 3-0.
Next door the number 4 seeds were doing battle. Andy's lob and drop game versus Chris Wilkes' hit and hope it doesn't hit the tin game. Wilkes is sublime when avoiding the tin and somehow even manages to look cool when he hits the tin. A PAR game with this type of squash would be over in 15 minutes. However we were treated to at least half an hour of one player trying to outdo the other as Chris just managed to keep his head, hit less tins than Andy and take the game 3-0.
Next on were the number 2 seeds. This saw Will taking on Stuart and both with a healthy reputation for running. The first game lasted the longest with Will nicking it 9-6. That seemed to take the wind out of Stuart and propel Will into recycling the ball to lengthen the rallies in order to kill the game. The tactic worked and he took the game 3-0. Meanwhile Olly was back after running his half marathon and a week off watching tennis. Graham, his opponent really did not play badly but was undone by some clinical finishing and hard hitting by Olly. When Olly plays like this, which is usually in the second half of the winter season he wins as he did this time, 3-0. That left Dave Kettle against James Cray. James stormed into a 1-0 lead fuelled by the previous night's sambucca and led 6-1 in the second game before Dave woke up and started to hit the ball. That changed things. Amazing what can happen when a player gets his racket up early, hits to a good length and finishes off the balls to the middle. a complete transformation by Dave and one felt for James as he went down 1-3.
A sporting contest and interesting talk afterwards, especially about James Cray's night out. Hope everyone got back okay and well played all. |
