Report: | Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, Bexley tried their best but went home feeling blue.
A solid performance by Dulwich 3 saw off a Bexley team playing a little under par.
With the new tarmacked road/car park, new glass backed courts and a professional competition soon to be held at the club, Dulwich is definitely looking up these days.
1st up were Antonio and Ron and they set about a mammoth 5 setter which took so long that 2 other games were finished in the meantime on the other court. Antonio was all blistered up from new shoes but that didn't stop him taking the first with a run of points after a cagey start. The 2nd looked to be going the same way but Ron fought back and when Antonio called 1 at 8 all Ron promptly took it to level things up. Ron then had the upper hand and marched through the next game and seemed to be doing the same in the 4th but Antonio then started the fightback and from 5-1 down went straight through to game point and finished it off after a few more rallys. The 5th saw Ron again taking an early lead and at 6-1 looked to be heading for a win but Antonio was not done and he ground out the points to take it 9-7.
On the other court Duncan was storming through his match against Andrew with out too much trouble although it started to get a little tighter towards the end of the 2nd but Duncan finished it off. The 3rd started off being all Duncan but then Andrew started to move a bit better and put together almost 9 points on the trot to take it. The 4th however saw Duncan regain control and it wasn't too long before it was all over.
Then on came Ian and Nanu with Ian not messing about in the 1st. The 2nd was nip and tuck most of the way with Ian just ahead and eventually making that count. The 3rd was again all Ian and it was wrapped up in 3.
On the other court Colin started off against Graham and they had an almighty 1st game which ended with an ever tighter finish where both players had a number of game points before Colin finally won it. That seemed to knock the stuffing out of Graham and Colin took a grip of the match and won the next two with ease.
Finally it was Jack and Stuart and these two seemed quite well matched and the 1st two games were very tight with each of them winning one. The 2nd had some lengthy rallys and got quite fraught towards the end with Jack winning out and then taking control in the 3rd to go 2-1 up. Then followed two more very tight games with each player winning one resulting in two very knackered players and Dulwich with a 5-0 whitewash - first of the season!
Horse bangers and mash followed and all who stayed had plenty of second helpings - the washing up was neigh problem and we all then hoofed it out the door and galloped on home! |
