Report: | Park Langleys U25's (+ Adam) turned up for their first home match this season spritely and eager, with 3 of the team in particularly bouyant mood over their freshly restrung rackets!
First up, Adam vs. Stefan:
Making his debut for the 5th team (and bringing the average up ever so slightly) Adam informed us he "was feeling like sh*t, but wouldn't let the team down". Never has their been a truer statement made! The first game was a scrappy affair, neither player really warming up, but the odd winner here and there saw Adam take an early lead and eventually close out to take the first game. Coming off court with coughing and spluttering, Stefan drew confidence and for the next 2 games just kept Adam running around the court... Not something he particularly enjoyed and so in next to no time, it was 2-1 to Stefan. Adam looked about ready to die at this stage and would've surely been grateful if Stefan had blitzed the next game 9-0. After a quick chat with his team mates, and apparently striking a deal with the grim reaper to allow him to carry on living, Adam somehow summoned the strength and energy to step up the court and volley/boast/kill anything within arms reach! A totally unexpected but nevertheless impressive win putting PL 1 up on the night.
Over on the graveyard court - Robbie vs. Will
PL's latest prodigy has been in imperious form lately, evidently a summer of continuous training with messers Ford and Harris have paid off. Whilst I didn't see a single shot of the match, the scoreline would suggest Robbie went about his usual destructive business.
Nilen vs. John
One of the afore mentioned team members who were excited about their new strings, Nilen was purring with approval after the warm up! John had arrived late and needed to get on court quickly so to be able to get back to poorly children. Maybe this was a distraction as I know John can be a tricky customer, though it must be said Nilen seemed in total control and the scoreline accurately reflects his confidence on court at the moment.
2nd up on the graveyard court Paul vs. Richard
This was always going to be an interesting one, two known "run-all-day-ers" facing up to each other. The first game, despite the scoreline was a long one, rallies continuing to be upwards of the 40 shot mark but in the end a few too many mistakes from Richard allowed Paul to close out the game. Asking for advice from his team, Richard was told "You won't out rally him, try to hit some nicks!"... And he did, although Paul still just about took the second game to put himself in a commanding position at 2-0 up. I left to go and play my game at this point and was surprised to see that Paul hadn't closed the game out, I can only imagine there was a case of Richard tightening his shots up and Paul losing concentration but in the end put his game face back on to win out 9-3 in the 5th. Both players looked spent afterwards!
Final match of the night Richard vs. Ashley
Another one with freshly strung strings, Richard was taking on Ashley who this season appears to have been bumped down the order. The first was close, with both players employing a solid drive game but the captain managed to force a few more errors from Ash to close out the first. Team orders: "Stay tight, don't f*ck it up". The second game appeared to be going according to plan, when, inexplicably the racket shaft snapped - Amazing how heavy a squash ball can be! Anyhow, one new racket later and some disciplined squash saw Rich see out the match for a very welcome 5-0 victory for PL.
Good chat in the bar afterwards, Tunbridge seemingly certain that Robbie will be on the pro circuit this time next year (although quite how when he still won't finish his dinner!). Look forward to the return leg. |
