Report: | Cannons Fire Warning To Rest Of The League!
For the second time this season, Cannons beat local rivals Bromley CC, and cemented their position in 2nd place.
James McMeckan (HOBO) made the journey up from Canterbury in a bid to strengthen the team and gain some much needed points for a struggling Bromley CC
First on were No. 1 Sam and King Lewy.
In the reverse fixture earlier on in the season King Lewy pulled out an impressive performance and beat Sam easily 3-0.
Straight from the off Sam exerted his game on a tired looking King Lewy. Although the first game was 9-1 to Sam, the game was full off long rallies, but Sam was on form chasing down everything and then killing the rally with impressive winners.
The second game began better for King Lewy and he hung on in there against a tiring Sam, but Sam prevailed 9 - 7. A frustrated King Lewy lobbed his racquet in frustration.
The match turned in the third. Sam went 8-5 up and had several match points, but to the frustration of himself and the Cannons supporters, he couldn't kill King Lewy off. King Lewy battled and won the game 9-8.
Full off confidence and sensing the demise of Sam, King Lewy took a 7-3 lead. Sam was tired and his game was littered with errors. Unfortuneatly a routine drop for King Lewy which hit his racquet head, gave Sam a lifeline. He quickly wittled away King Lewys' lead and won the game 9-7. 3-1 to Sam. At this point King Lewy attempted to throw his racquet out of the stratosphere.
Later on in the bar Sam was ridiculing King Lewy for losing 3-0 to Stephanie Brind in a cup game last week. A fair point, beacuse who loses to a girl? But I have to remind Sam that he lost 3-0 earlier on in the season to King Lewy. So Sam, you lost 3-0 to a guy who lost 3-0 to a girl, hence you would have lost 6-0 to a girl.
Richard (3-2er) Vs HOBO at 2.
Why HOBO I hear you ask?
Every Bromley CC player has a nickname. James aka HOBO, turned up at Bromley South station looking like he'd just come off the street with his retro student homeless look.
Then as he walked past Sam and King Lewy warming up, Sam turned round and said, who's that homeless person?
HOBO was pre warned before his guest appearence for Bromley CC, that Richard would be tough opposition. Every match he plays seems to go to 3-2.
HOBO had been on the lash the previous evening and had sunk 10 turbo shandies (some type of student drink?). He had also been up until about 6am with some bird. Despite this he managed to win the 1st game 9-7, as both players tried to out do each other in the 'Who Could Play Worse?' stakes.
HOBO changed his racquet in the 2nd and it definetly didn't work as he lost it 9-0.
HOBO had built a lead in the 3rd and then a contentious decision turned the game.
Richard wanted a let for HOBO calling out in the rally. All HOBO did was shout 'OOH' as he was hit with the racquet, but it didn't effect the rally. It clearly wasn't a let, but HOBO decided to be genourous and play the point again (going against the marker). Richard never said thanks for the act of sportsmanship, which agitated HOBO.
Richard seized on HOBOs' frustration and took the game 9-6.
A clearly fired up HOBO won the nxt game easily 9-2 to force a decider. Unfortuneatly the editor missed this game, but could hear the shouts and screams from the vociferous Cannons support. HOBO went down 10-9, giving Richard another 3-2 win.
Dave Leach Vs Captain at 3.
Captain had ended his 7 game losing streak the previous week in a cup match. He was now looking for his second win on the trot against wiley old Dave.
Distracted by the shouts and the outcome of HOBO's match, Captain underestimated Dave, who built an early lead with good play around the front of the court. However, Captain fought back and took the game 10-8.
Dave went 8-0 up in the second, as Captain lost all focus. A late rally to 8-6 looked like Captain would take the second game, but Dave held on 9-6.
The 3rd and 4th followed the same pattern. Captain would take commanding leads, and then let Dave back in. In the 4th Dave fought back to 7-7 and it looked like it was going to a fifth. Captain hit a lucky boast off the grip, this demoralised Dave, and Captain prevailed 9-7 and 3-1.
Despite being warned about Dave by his Dad, Captain underestimated Daves ability and was lucky to win 3-1.
Whilst the two big time charlies, HOBO and King Lewy, relaxed in the Sauna and Jacuzzi, it was left to Captain to provide support for Big Andy and Student.
D Beevers Vs Big Andy at 5.
The first two games were tight but Cannons won them 9-7 and 9-6, however Big Andy stepped up his game in the third and won 9-4. Cannons fought back and a tiring Big Andy couldn't maintain his form and lost 9-3 and 3-1.
Captain felt Big Andy played really well, one of the best games he's played for a while. Big Andy disagreed, and had a good old moan about how fat and unfit he was afterwards. The advice given too him was to stay off the booze. He agreed and decided to have only 2 pints instead of the regular 4 pints.
When it was commented that he shouldn't have any, he said he was cutting down slowly, and would only have 4 bottles of Magners on wednesdays instead of the usual 8.
He did cut out most of the food though. He can't eat cheese, so had to miss out on the delicious Cheese Lasagne, instead he ate several bags of CHEESE flavoured Quavers. (He doesn't really get it, does he?)
Hopefully by the end of the season, he will have a new nickname... (Fit Andy)
Peter Vs Student at 4
Student had been flu ridden for the previous 2 weeks, and hadn't played since Dulwich on the 17th of Jan. The last thing he needed was a macth against Peter.
Peter strolled the first two, 9-1 9-2. The Student looked dispondent and tired. Peters' slow pace was destroying Student.
By this time King Lewy had made an appearence, and coupled with some inspirational advice by Captain Motivator and King Lewy, Student began to find his form. His deadly backhand was working, and he pulled out an array of winners.
Richard commented 'He's got an array of shots hasn't he?'
However Peter fought back, and a tired looking Student succumbed 9-8, and 3-0.
A deflated Bromley CC have now lost 3 league games on the spin, up next are old foes Bexley.
Dutch Prodigy who is in Brazil, will be unavailable so won't be able to exact revenge on Badger for his 10-9 in the fifth defeat. HOBO may be recalled to bolster the squad if we can find him.
When we left the club he was still in the sauna, I think (hope he's okay, probably found somewhere warm to spend the night).
Captain just hopes he stays off the booze on Monday night. Unfortuneatly he's a student and tuesday is his birthday, so it's very unlikely.
Anyway, what did Alan Hansen once say? 'You never win anything with Students'
