Report

Report:It may be SE24 rather than SW19, but top class rackets sports were still taking place at the Giant Arches Arena as unbeaten league leaders Bexley were entertained by last year’s champs Dulwich. A decent crowd knew Watson at the club and turned up to support the homeside.

The old(er) combatants kicked things off as Tim and Ben once again went toe to toe. As tends to be case these days in summer months the quality wasn’t really strawberries and cream, more raspberries and custard. A scrappy encounter saw odd winner in between several balls that were so far out that it didn’t require a referee with a Hawk Eye to call them. Tim managed to keep the ball in play a little better and longer to win in three close games.

Meanwhile Will was strutting his stuff on the court next door. Hot off some warm weather training in Turkey, he came out quicker than the Fed Express against Matt. Having then almost allowed his opponent back in to it he edged the first before serving his way through second and closing out the third to record a straight sets win and put Dulwich in the driving seat.

Antonio and Ant’s match began competitively and peaked when Antonio took a novak in mouth from Ant’s racket mid-way through the first. A blood injury break ensued and once Antonio had been assured his Italian good looks were still ‘intact’ he was back in to the fray, albeit it giving Ant a slightly wider berth! He maintained his composure through 3 tight games evening saving game balls in the third to secure the win for the home team.

The match of the evening took place whilst all the above drama was unfolding. Having given Neil a scare last time out Josh was clearly keen to demonstrate his intent from the first serve. He played some excellent squash in the first, saved three game balls to nick the second and only started to stumble when at match ball in the third. Neil clearly wasn;t keen on giving up scalp and dug in from 7/10 and the match then see-sawed as both players had chances before Neil snuck it 16/14. However, Josh wasn’t done and romped to an early lead in the fourth and never looked back as he closed out the match in four.

To cap a good night for the Masters camp, Brad put in an equally impressive performance against Andy M. The first was tight all the way but it was the youngster who held his nerve to take it and kept the pressure on in the next two to secure more valuable points for the away side.

As always it was Olleys finest fish and chips rather than prawn sandwiches to round off an enjoyable nights Priory league.
