Report

Report:The crowd turned expecting a whitewash as the Dulwich 1sts took on the 2nds in tropical conditions. Opening the batting for the junior team was freshman Neal Brooker facing the pace of Garner along with his many years, even decades, of experience over his younger opponent. Hitting a perfect line and length mixed with several slower balls pitching well up the court Garner soon had his man trapped. Neal hung in there with a grim determination, slowly clawing back points but was unable to dominate his adversary's control of the ball, going down 0-3.

Meanwhile the number 5 seeds went on and Kettle steamed ahead to take the first game 12-10. The new version of Antonio though is a fitter and faster one and he was not going to be outdone by his old team mate. Antonio started hitting even harder making the ball travel around the court like a blue dot, draining Kettle in the process and taking the match 3-1.

With a whitewash on the cards on went Chris Clark against Jim Bristow, neither having won a match this summer. Clarky was unbeaten last winter but has taken his foot off the pedal a little this summer and one of these two was going to continue with their losing streak. Chris dashed Jim's recovery in the second game to win 3-1 thereby avoiding a whitewash.

Will and Will were battling away on the other court and Will all but killed himself to win the first game. Will however was not about to lose this match and predictably came back against Will who was spent after the first game to win 3-1. The third however was close as Will played some outrageous shots on a hot, fast court that beat Will until some control was secured by the latter Will to bring the match home.

That left Jon versus Andy. Jon had scraped a 3-2 win in the corresponding fixture in the first half of the season and started the match in the same way. Playing entertaining squash has always been Jon's way and soon we had the volley nicks, drops from the back and wrong footing shots firing from his racket. Andy changed his tactics after the first game and thereby stopped the ridiculous shots that appeared to be engulfing him in the first match. Jon went down 1-3 but a great match to watch from an entertainment perspective as both players are gifted technically and move well around the court.

A 1-4 defeat but a decent meal to follow and a discussion on what Kettle should wear in a Monopoly themed fancy dress pub crawl.
