Report

Report:Oh Boy was it a close affair in the top of the table clash at Giant Arch Duke Road in Dulwich, as the league leaders entertained a dangerous Canterbury side. First up, the lean mean fighting machine that is Antonio II took on Kieran in an encounter that set the tone for the evening. The home player came flying out of the blocks but Kieran was unflustered and bounced back strongly taking the second and then the third. Defending an unbeaten record Antonio fought valiantly but with a backhand volley drop that the Prince of Egypt Shabana would have been pleased with Kieran closed out the match.

Meanwhile William was taking on Joseph of Magor in a battle that was equally finely balanced. The heat clearly had an effect with runs of points dominating the match early on. Will’s Prince wand took control in the third but it looked to be-heading in to a decider as Joe got to 10/8 in the fourth but Will held firm and eventually ran out a winner 13/11.

Next up Dulwich captain Timothy of Ghana took on John to see who could claim the title of number 1 on the night. Tim edged the first before John pulled it back and even won over the home crowd with his powerful play. The third was crucial and a big rally at 9-9 tipped the match in Tim’s favour and he managed to squeeze and error to nick the game and then the fourth to edge Dulwich ahead.

On court 4 Andy and Duane were having a battle royale in the steamy summer conditions. Andy managed to get ahead 2-1, but Duane got a great start in the fourth and never looked back in securing the bagel. Andy regrouped in the fifth and put points on the board but sadly not enough to secure the win so leaving the match beautifully poised at two all. To the delight of the home team who could see there was only going to be one Windsor in this scenario, with Jim needing to dig deep and go through some serious pain!

And by George did the match live up to expectations! Jim got off to a decent start to take the first, but the legs started to wobble a little in the second as Tom worked hard to hang in to the rallies before moving Jim around in response. The third and fourth were titanic tussles, Jim just got home in the third but having got back from 6/9 in the fourth appeared to running on fumes as he couldn’t close it out at the first attempt. At 10-10 he was hanging in there, only saved by the ball being so bouncy that he could just get to it but having finally given up the ghost Tom tinned a drop and there was still hope. Another excruciating rally ensued before Jim finally clinched things and then clenched his fist to signal the end of the losing streak and the Birth of a winning one.

It was in the nick of time as no sooner had the players left the court than the lights went out, such was the late hour. Owner Harry wasn’t at Olleys to hear the good news, but the fish and chips were still in a class of their own and there was much chat about what Junkies will have in store for the Dulwich massif (ex. Will) and in particular for Antonio and his Clockwork Orange outfit …
