Report: | The last home match for PL1 in a season of sporadic matches interspersed with many gaps saw us entertaining Dulwich II and seeking revenge for the first half loss.
First up Young v Wilkes.
Zeb didn't find himself in much need of nursing his tennis elbow in this one from the bits I saw. Chris looked to be making an inordinate amount of mistakes, making Zeb's life much easier. In the end Zeb came through fairly comfortably.
Next door, Pratt v Nicholson.
Even though this was a case of more heard than seen, unlike days of yore, it wasn't WW making all the noise. Will decided in retrospect he'd been taking lessons off his toddler, and became a little frustrated by some of the calls. Nevertheless, this was a well contested match with both players covering the court well. WW, having been at the club since early doors, was keen to be off and vanished after wrapping up a good win.
Next on Culver v Barnes.
This was a strange match. Jon (obviously "Diggy" is a thing of the past) went off into a 7-0 lead in the 1st only to lose the next 11 points and the game. The next one was rather more even, but a few mistakes and Simon chasing down a couple of good ones saw the 2nd also pouched by WB. By the time the 3rd and final game was under way, Jon looked to have somewhat lost the motivation and Simon polished that off in short order to take the match.
Next door, London snr v Armstrong.
Pretty predictable stuff in this one. Ian belting the living daylights out of pretty much every ball, and the author looking (or certainly feeling) pretty bemused at the number of mistakes and gifts he was dollying up. In truth after taking the 1st, Ian could quite easily have taken the 2nd with a bit more patience. The 3rd was tight as well and only in the 4th did the author show some semblance of sensible squash to ease through.
The final match of the night: Robbins v Clark.
Having not got away from work until after 7.30pm JEJ was starting to set the cap's alarm bells going as 8.30pm arrived. Once here though, it was a case of easing back in as JEJ hasn't been on court (in a match) due to injury since mid June. The match was a bit of an irritable affair really. It takes some doing to get JEJ wound up, but this was becoming the case as the match wore on. Some dubious let calls/contesting etc accompanied a tight match which went all the way. A very creditable performance with restricted mobility, but in the end Chris had too much court coverage and took it.
The main excitement of the evening came from the 3rd team match next door. As the 1sts benefited from the lovely PAR to luxuriate in the bar by 10ish, the 3rds were still battling (literally) on. Zeb returned with reports of the no.1s being on the point of braining each other. All in all a good evening with the Dulwich boys. |
