Report

Report:With both teams missing their number 1's it was time for others to shine.

1st up was newbie Simon up against oldbie Andy and early on a pattern was set where Simon would take a commanding lead with some deft early volleys and Andy would hit the tin when under pressure. Simon was too sharp in the first and he took it for the loss of just two points with Andy still trying to get going. The 2nd again saw Simon run away to a 7-2 lead but this time Andy upped his game and worked hard to bring it back level and after a couple of handouts he grabbed the last two points to make it 1-1. At this stage it could go either way but the 3rd followed the same pattern as the 1st two and Simon was again 7-2 up before Andy started to make progress. This time however just as Andy got things level again Simon held firm to go 2-1 up. Guess what? The 4th again saw Simon 7-2 up again and Andy again started his comeback but alas it was too little too late and Simon finished things off - well played on his first senior team match.

On the other court Thomas (another 1st timer) was up against Phil and this one was crash, bang, wallop all the way with both players slamming the ball all around the court. The 1st two were close all the way but Phil just edged them to go 2 up. The 3rd was again a close one and just as it seemed Thomas was on his way with a string of points Phil ran through from 5-2 down to take it and the match 3-0.

On the other court Ian was on against Mike and this turned out to be the match of the night. Both players were tonking it with all they had. Ian seemed to at times be tonking it a little harder than Mike and in the 1st Ian's accuracy and Mike's mistakes meant that Ian went 1 up. The 2nd was close up until the mid point but after a bunch of hand outs Mike won 3 points in a row to reach game point and after a few more handouts he closed it out make things level. The 3rd was close with some more hard hitting and good retrievals from Mike which in the end saw him win out and go 2-1 up. The 4th was a full on tussle with both players looking at times like taking it but just as Mike seemed to be edging away Ian held firm and played some strong rallys and finished off to make it 2-2. The final set was tough for both players but the standard remained high with both players having more often than not to play winners to win points. Mike seemed to have worked out a winning formula down the back hand court but at 6-6 it was anyone's game but Mike just held out to take a hard fought match - well played.

The final game up was Colin and George. Colin made a good start in the 1st game and at 5-1 looked like the likely winner but George then woke up and ran through the game without dropping another point. The second saw George continuing in the same vane and it was soon 2-0 to George. With Colin maybe suffering a little George continued to dominate and he soon had it won 3-0.

Well played to The Park Club - they played well and deserved the win tonight.
