Report

Report:Well, this match was definitely an experience. Despite it being a pretty cold night I don't think the PL team was quite ready for what awaited. Rather like playing in an arctic disco. Freezing cold courts (think Sundridge Park circa 1980 and you get the idea - those that are old enough to remember), with the added bonus of three strobing court lights at one point (only the one on the other court).

Anyway, whinge over and onto the match. Messrs Ford and Rich stepped up to the plate first. Adam started the match off in fine form, building a commanding lead. More straight stuff and less boasts than the normal fare paying dividends. As the match wore on though, it became a tight affair, with Adam sneaking it at the end of a tough 4th game.

On the other court Martin and London jnr were battling the aforementioned conditions. The temperature seemed to suit Alex pretty well, as he proceeded to play his normal (high) quota of exceedingly tight low shots. Steve battled away, but every time a less than perfect length was hit, sure enough the ball would disappear into the nick or thereabouts. All games were reasonably close, but Alex came through 3-1.

Whiteman and Gill was a game of two dramatically different halves. Paul went of like a train, and Matt seemed pretty out of sorts. The first two games were over pretty sharpish, with Matt looking like he was heading for an early bath. Not sure what illegal substances were administered between the 2nd and 3rd games, but they did the trick. Matt stepped up the pace and started playing some quality stuff, reeling off the next three in impressive fashion.

Cue Grey and London snr. The old crock got into his stride pretty quickly here and ensured that the back preservation tactic of getting off court as quickly as possible was the order of the day.

Last up were Seed and Bonner. Your intrepid correspondent didn't see any of this (being on court at the same time), but judging from the scores, the fact that it was played on Ice Station Zebra, and the smug expression on Bonner's face afterwards, it appears that Andy eased himself into gear in the 1st game before turning on the afterburners.

One measly point clawed back against "mighty Hill", but team selection is going to be a fraught process for PL over the next few weeks, so it's going to be a struggle.
