Report

Report:After what seems an inordinately short break, we're back in harness again as the PL season kicked off against Bromley LTC last night. Unusually, PL were able to field their full strength team, which turned out to be just as well against BLTC's top end in particular.

First up London jnr v Jeal.
A late decision by Steve to risk the effects of jet lag proved to be narrowly justified as he battled through a tough match against Ted. I only saw the middle of this, but it was a tight affair all the way through with Steve having to save a match ball in the 4th. Sadly (and I didn't really see any of this), the 5th got a bit controversial with Ted being very disgruntled about a few decisions. This culminated after the match had ended in what we'll charitably call "some jostling" of Simon who'd been marking. Bit of an unedifying spectacle really, but Simon seems to have handled it pretty well by all accounts. Pity really, as this was a good match.

Next door, London snr v McManus
For the umpteenth time the two elder statesmen crossed swords again. Nothing like the excitement on the next door court but Gordon struggled to remember that we were using PAR (having been Div 2 in the summer presumably). The author managed to claw back deficits of a few points in every game and just about did enough to take each of them and complete a 3-0 win.

Next on, Robbins v Gallard.
Clinton looks to be well back into form now and this was a really hard fought battle. JEJ has been doing quite a bit of "summer training" in the form of running and the mobility levels were massively improved over his injury hit summer. Just as well as he was made to do a lot of work. A lot of quality shots and good retrieving from both, a few mistakes, mainly from Clinton towards the end of the 4th, but all in all a great match to watch (and mark - played in good spirits).

Next door Culver v Shaw.
Simon was unsurprisingly pretty demotivated to play squash by the time he got on court (see above), and hasn't really played in a while. Nevertheless, he looks to have done enough to take the match fairly comfortably. Since I was on marking duties I can't really comment further.

Last on Pratt v Patel.
A minor miracle in itself seeing Steve (a) go on last, and (b) stay to eat. Didn't see a ball of this. As I was about to go and watch having obtained suitable refreshments, Steve walked into the bar! On and off in very short order, and said he hoped he'd be playing that way all season. Lots of coaching (given) obviously has benefited his game.

Fairly early finish to the evening allowed plenty of time for discussion of impending and newly arrived family members from the less senior elements of the team(s).
