Report

Report:With two glaring exceptions last night it was a very youthful line-up all round as PL1 entertained Bexley I. The PL team were looking a bit light at the top end with Steve away and JEJ injured. As it transpired though it was a very tight match with a rather unfortunate ending.

First up: Kennedy v Garrett.
Didn't really see any of this, but as it later transpired, there was some trepidation in the Bexley ranks about coming up against the "girlie", notably from the Henley camp! Anyway, Ant drew the short straw and it looks to have been a close fought battle with Gina managing to extend her impressive run of form in team matches to finally see off Ant's power hitting in a 3-2 win.

Next door: London snr v Martell.
A decent match with all games being very close. Bit of a contrast in many ways this one. The author allowed frustration with some of his shot selection and a couple of marking decisions get in the way of playing at the sharp end of the games. Jack just kept his head down and did what he needed to. Very tight with quite a few protracted rallies, but ultimately youth won out to level the match.

Next up: Culver v Masters snr (although that's a bit of a misnomer at 18 or whatever)!
Didn't see too much of this, but what I did see was very impressive. Both players were using every inch of the court. Simon was complaining about a (for him) very unusual schedule of 4 matches in 4 days on the back of a successful county weekend, but kept going well and covered a lot of court. From what I saw, the only real difference was Josh's ability to put the ball away short on the forehand. This was most obviously demonstrated when slotting another overhead nick at match ball. A quality encounter.

Next door: Peel v Henley.
Supersub does it again. Nick has produced two storming performances in two weeks and helped significantly in allowing the tail to wag the team dog. Despite looking as though he was going to fold as a tight thigh restricted his mobility from the start of the 3rd, he floated and dinked the ball very tight to good lengths, and used years of experience to counter Ed's mobility and hard running game. This one squared up the match.

Last on: Pratt v Masters jnr (see above).
Steve looked to be in for a torrid evening judging by Brad's recent results but this is where the unfortunate ending alluded to above came in. After a barnstorming start by Steve, where Brad looked to be a bit off the pace, Brad decided after the first few points of the 2nd that the residual drugging from his earlier dental visit was a bridge too far and retired. Steve briefly looked like he was about to commemorate the win by getting a life size poster of himself printed at the point of victory, but then realised that a game and a half's court time was poor recompense for getting there first, marking two matches, getting on last etc, particularly in the light of what happened last week at TW!

And so, a welcome if unexpected victory for PL as we repaired to the bar. Once again the estimable non-playing Bexley manager, Mr Lewis, was sporting enough to be the butt of the ageist jokes and give the PL oldsters a break from it. Nice to see so many young players in a match.
