Report

Report:The fixture might not go back 150 years, but the Dulwich v Bexley battles have a bit of history and tonight’s fixture had all the drama of previous encounters.

First up it was the old foes Badger & Brownsdon who locked horns. Will came out of the blocks fast, Matt was still stuck in the blocks and was heading for the door at 0/9 before realising the modern game plays to 11! A few more points later and it was actually all over. Sadly only the game, not the match, as Matt hung in and started to drive Will round the Bender. The next three could have gone either way, but ended up going Matts’ direction by the narrowest of margins.

Meanwhile Tim & Ben were playing each other for the 28th time. The pace was frantic at the start, and Tim managed have the better of it opening up a two game lead and jumping to 9/4 in the third. Schurrle it wasn’t going to be a 3-0 win? That has been unheard of over the years. And it wasn’t! Tim started to tire and Ben knuckled down causing the inevitable swing and a couple of match balls saved later it was 2-1. The fourth looked to be following a similar pattern of play, Tim got up to 9/4 once more & Ben battled back to 9-9 but a squeezed error followed by a tin and man with the Dulwich armband was home.

It was good to have Paddy back in the fold after his Eastern European training/holiday camp, and he started brightly enough against Ron but got edged in the first. The second slipped away, but Paddy Götze a better start to the third and looked like he might pull one back, leading 8/6 and 9/7 but eventually getting done in straight games.

Paul also began well against Jack, clearly a few days on the Guinness in Dublin had paid dividends and he came out on top form taking the first. The second was tight all the way and was always going to be crucial to both players. Jack eventually took it 11/9 leaving Paul to Reus a chance at 9-8 to set up the game ball. Jack took confidence from winning it and never looked back in closing it and the overall fixture out.

Last up Jim took on Gary, the latter looking in good shape and the former looking good for someone aged 35, which is a relief given he is nearly a decade younger (so no Ravi, he can’t play in the O35 team!). Jim has been in good form in recent weeks and his quality placement of the ball with minimum effort was once again paying dividends. Having taken the first couple of games he was able to Kruse through the third and restore some respectability to the score-line.

So a good win for the away team as they look to stay ahead of the Bexley Under 21 team, and a first loss for the home side that keeps the league nicely poised. Whilst it would have been a real Philip to have some Lahm on the menu, it was great to have the return of Olleys finest fish and chips after last weeks winter break.
