Report

Report:With the Dulwich openers, Jamie Wilde and Chris Clark away holidaying in Barbados and Rome respectively (rather than together!) a makeshift team was never going to seriously challenge Bexley 1sts. So it proved with the numbers 1 and 5 on first and Bexley powering through to a 2-0 lead.

Olly Ruff was a nick away from taking a 2-1 lead as his oppoenent familiarised himself with the Dulwich tin. But it was not to be as two volley drops went down and Shaun took the 2-1 lead instead. With his tail up Shaun found his line in the fourth game to win 3-1. Meanwhile Masters the Elder was taking on Neal who usually goes in at number 3. Facing a daunting task Neal put up a good fight playing uninhibited squash, which if replicated at number 3 would win him most if not all his matches at that position. But at the top the fight was not enough and he went down 0-3.

The next pair on were Dave Kettle against Jack Martell and Masters the Younger against Will. Kettle, steaming under the pressure of division 1 squash at number 3 when he has yet to register a win at 5, was an outside bet. No storm in a teacup here as Jack professionally executed a fine 3-0 win over his opponent, giving Bexley the match on the night. Meanwhile Masters the Younger was carrying out a 3-0 demolition of his own over Will "The Torpedo" Nicholson. If only The Torpedo's shots had the same lethal efficacy as his retrieving he would have taken the third game. However there was clearly some technical malfunctioning in The Torpedo's engine which will require adjusting by the boffin,Professor Meddings a.k.a The Coach, who created this creature and who is now back in the U.K. The Torpedo will thereby undergo servicing over the next few weeks, missing out on league action, before being unleashed in the National Club Championships. It must be said top marks to Brad Masters and to Josh for the quality of their squash.

This left the most amusing match of the evening. Ben Grinnell against Anthony Garrett. Try and picture the scene, Ben in his tight anti-drag shorts and wet suit style t-shirt supporting a white, greyish beard with dark bits looked like a galactic bearded creature dressed for a wet suit competition. Anthony decided he was not going to hang around to see if his opponent was in fact some invader from a distant galaxy and shot into a 2-0 lead. In the third Anthony had seemingly reached escape velocity, 2-0 up in games and 6-3 as our minds turned to fish, chips and beer when he ran into a galactic storm and that now infamous quote sprang to mind, "Houston we have a problem". His opponent's extra-terrestrial brand of squash started to take effect. Tin after tin after profanity followed and Ben took the game 11-8. In the fourth game it seemed as if order had been resumed but 10-6 up and holding the match ball, Anthony's focus disappeared down a deep black hole and tin followed tin and more questioning not just of the decisions that went against him but of the sanity of the rules of squash. Ben saved four match balls and then took the fourth game 12-10. On to the fifth when the writing was on the wall. Anthony was in freefall now and having demonstrated his dominance in the first two and a half games now demonstrated another side to him. The galactic bearded creature won 3-2. Almost the end of November when the beard will go but I suspect the rest is here to stay.

Well played to Bexley and look forward to the return when I hope the match can be a little more even with the return of Clarky and Jamie.
