Report

Report:The 2nds came out in sympathy with the England cricketers to get a 5-0 hammering.

Other than Will Brownsdon's new shoes, Tim v Jamie was the pick of the night that saw contrasting styles of control against power. The match hinged on the third game in which Jamie had a lead, which Tim then clawed back and finally stole the game to take a 2-1 lead. Jamie had broken a string in the second game, when he smashed the ball in the nick, receiving serve on his forehand, to take the game. His racket no doubt decided that was enough punishment and I am surprised the ball survived. His second racket also gave up as the end part came off in the fourth game, again no doubt due to the wear and tear created by the power with which he hits that ball. Nevertheless without a proper racket Jamie stayed firm (unlike the English cricketers) and competed in the fourth but he could not stop Tim winning 3-1.

Olly versus Paul was another whirlwind affair with Paul in storming form taking the match 3-0 before Olly knew what had hit him. Chris went on against Jim only to aggravate an injury and concede the match. Antonio against Tom saw Antonio working off his Christmas carbohydrate, wine and chocolate diet to win 3-0.

That left Will v Will. Brownsdon had splashed out on a pair of high tech trainers with motion censor control. The shoes aid movement - there was me thinking that all shoes are supposed to do that, but then again I am not a scientist. Advertising gimmick or real? Apparently they worked - Will started attacking the front of the court rather than lounging around at the back waiting for his opponent to lose the rally. He was now winning the rallies from the front. A case of the tail wagging the dog.
